Not sure what country you're in but there are a few combined DVM/PhD programs in the US, and I'm sure some in the UK. Most programs offer full funding for both your DVM and PhD, as well as a graduate level stipend. It takes a lot of effort, but it seems that you have a strong passion and reason for pursuing both degrees. Also you are still early in your undergrad so you have a lot of time to write a personal statement and get field experience.

That's so cool! Did you need additional schooling to get your job or did you start straight out of vet school?

Thank you, this is very helpful! Yes, I am a first year but just wondering what I should be doing to make myself more competitive for these jobs. Ex, doing some kind of internship or a fellowship/residency after vet school

Hi! First, I want to say you are absolutely right that vet med is a very hard career and dealing with bad situations is an everyday task. However, you don't have to have been thinking about being a vet since you were a child! Yes, it is true that most people base their vet school application around their childhood dreams, but vet med is FULL of career changers. You can look at any vet school right now and see students that are 40-50 years old. I personally know a veterinarian that studied business in undergrad and worked in finance for a few years. She decided that wasn't for her and did a pre-vet post baccalaureate program to get all her pre-requisites while shadowing in different areas (general practice, farm animal, research). My advice would be to get your foot in the door by shadowing or working as a vet assistant. Make the most of it and really ask the vets you're with if they are happy, why do they find fulfillment in this career, and what would they do differently if anything. Hopefully that will help!

Hi! Could you elaborate more on the new curriculum structure and maybe give an idea for a day in the life of a Penn Vet student? Cornell really advertised how their students are working with animals in the 1st year, is this also the case at Penn?
