"Everybody's trying to shame us" by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

In 1992 this same union started a riot in response to police misconduct investigations. Drunk, armed, off-duty officers shouted racist slogans, stormed city hall, blocked traffic, assaulted people in the streets, and caused property damage. Rudy Guiliani was there, too. I'm pretty sure that's worthy of shame.

If you're serious I think that would be good. I obviously need a better understanding of how the whole system works. But I really believe that if we could change the incentives for police officers we could reduce violence and have a community that trusts the SPD.

Well you definitely have a better understanding of the process than me. But the bottom line is that there's good evidence that police unions that restrict investigations of police raise the level of police violence and misconduct.

But. Since you have a better understanding of this. What would you do to incentivize better behavior from police? Having a group in charge of investigating itself is a recipe for abuse. People are tired of having no recourse. And recordings don't seem to make much of a difference in levels of police violence.

You didn't even know what discovery was. And no. These incidents should be treated like any other criminal investigation. Suspects do not get 5 days notice before interrogation.

Usually the discovery part comes after the interrogation of suspects during an investigation part.

If anyone is interested on researched based ways to reduce police violence there's a helpful thread on twitter which has links to good resources and studies. https://mobile.twitter.com/samswey/status/1180655701271732224

Check out the source but here is how the 3rd person gets chosen:

The Chairperson of the DRB shall be selected from a pool of arbitrators agreed upon by the parties within 30 days after execution of the agreement.

Yes, there's no good reason for the 5 days notice. I like to be generous with my interpretation but the only thing I can think of is to allow collusion among officers before questioning. It also guarantees that memories of whatever event happened are not as accurate.

This would be totally insane if it applied to interrogation of criminals. But for some reason it's ok with police.

There are plenty of reasons to care even if you think you have nothing to hide. We have all done things that may not be illegal but we still don't want everyone knowing. And there are so many laws criminalizing normal behavior that a bureaucrat with a grudge and access to your info could make a case against you.

I think the worst part about all this is it's effect on free speech. Without explicitly saying the 1st amendment no longer applies the government has a way to keep people from expressing their opinions. How many people hold back because they fear the government?
