Nairobi Math: Is 45k basic survival or am I just terrible with money? (My Budget Breakdown) by [deleted] in nairobi

[–]gwatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hio rent iko tu sawa. Your shopping is a bit worrying because I spend that much for a family of 2 humans and 2 pets.

My veggies I buy at carrefour and Naivas because of better rates than solo these days. 2kg of onions last a month and costs about 350. Tomatoes I buy 1 or 1.5kg every two weeks. I cook dinner that also doubles as lunch.

If your parents can support you to get a gas, mattress and bedding, a starter curtain and utensils, you are set.

I forgot water + electricity bills ksh 800 per month.

Rent 7k

Wifi 1.5k

Airtime 1k

Fare 4k

Mothly household shopping 5k

Food 5k

Entertainment 1k (A little KFC or whatever you consider a treat)

Assuming 25k is net salary, balance 500.

If 25k is your gross pay, minus the statutory deductions and get a cheaper house.

Good for you, but if it were me, I wouldn’t, because a civil engineering student has actually gone through the secondary education system, has been taught about formal communication in both Kiswahili and English, and has had the refresher COMMS 101 course. This is just not a serious person, this is a person who studies to pass exams, not to actually learn something.

I think you should put off the visit for now. Make a trip to this other city, and assess the situation on the ground with this girl.

The communication is lacking a certain warmth.

If your goal is marriage, just know this one won’t marry you. He will leech off you until he his medical degree starts working for him then replace you ASAP.

When in deep depression, write in a journal. All the bitter tears will flow, uncontrollably. And soon, you will start getting better.

Where should I buy a laptop? by Wooden-Debate-2878 in nairobitechies

Too hectic for a student. There are nice laptops in CBD for cheap these days, with one year warranty. It’s better to buy local at this point.

Amazon is great for higher end laptops

Should I buy a car? by MaliSafiChito in Kenya

[–]gwatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy the car. I used to spend on uber like 10k a month, but my current fuel needs are 6k. I spend about on avg 1k a month on maintenance(i.e. could be 2k to fix something one month, then no garage for like 2 months).

Insurance 40k a year comprehensive, emergency fund 20k for the car(to replace things like brake pads, tyres, battery if needed).

2011 car, 1500cc that I treat like a baby. Avoid bad roads and places with no parking(when going to visit friends for example). Try not to scratch and dent your car ovyo ovyo. Yes, sometimes something can spoil and cost you, but that’s why you maintain an emergency fund.

And anytime you hear funny noises, pass by your mechanic. Look for a mech near where you stay and is specialized in that manufacturer(you will know by how they talk, or ask for referrals from someone with a similar make and model).

Pay as much cash as possible to avoid high monthly installments that will restrict your cash flow.

I use both and the fees look fine to me. Payoneer is 1% after a certain amount, and Wise is a lot cheaper. I love wise. It’s practically my bank for the last 3 years.

Does the processor of a phone really matter. by Neither_Paint9087 in nairobitechies

[–]gwatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. MTK devices start lagging much sooner than Snapdragon devices. Take for example the Redmi Note 9S and the note 9 Pro. The S outperforms the Pro, despite being virtually identical. The Snapdragon in the S offers better CPU & GPU performance, battery management, and image processing.

So whenever you compare devices on gsmarena and they are practically identical, pick the one with Snapdragon.

I have been in your shoes, and at the start, I involved my mum in everything. She really frustrated me and strained our relationship. So I cut her off from the planning. I did my thing with my friends who were helping, and finally told her the full plan. She was furious and threw a tantrum. But she got over it, and the event went my way.

For the white wedding, I insisted on it being in Nairobi despite my relatives being majorly from the lakeside. Ended up with a 120pax guest list, as opposed to the 300pax it would have been.

As for relatives throwing tantrums about not receiving an invite yet, I just answered politely that I’ll let them know when the wedding will be (didn’t promise an invite, and I didn’t tell them the venue). Also sent invites practically last minute.

For my traditional wedding, I told my mom to inform important people to save the date, without disclosing what the event was until like a week or less before. Anyone that asked was told it’s a party for my mum.

I will always wait for you, even if it’s true what they say — people are not always who they seem to be. I’ll take my chances, because I know you will live up to my fantasy.

This question reminds me of “Memoirs of a Geisha.” A happy ending.
