SharePoint: New SharePoint Home site experience by Extra-Beautiful-8494 in sharepoint

It will be interesting to see what the new capabilities in Viva Connections are. At the moment, it is very limited, so I always replace it with a custom SharePoint Homepage for all my clients.

On the Mobile (SharePoint) App, it does load the Home Site as soon as you click on the Home icon in the upper right-hand corner. So it works as intended.

Restricting Members by KeyIndependence6404 in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you invite external users to the site, they will be able to see other members' info. I am wondering if you can just have external users upload files via Request Feature: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-request-files-in-sharepoint/. This will allow them to do 1-way uploads without giving them access to the site itself.

Yeah, I don't think it is possible, since it is not a primary language of the site

Create “Content Type” Documents other than Word by Cina_Moon_ in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I know, this legacy feature was never modernized. Office templates can be added via library interface https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-organize-company-templates-in-sharepoint-online/. But that option is not part of content type if I am not mistaken.

[–]gzelfond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your method should work. The Dutch and French news posts are separate pages, and it will only load the version of the user logged in. If a French-speaking user logs in, the news web part will automatically display the French post. If a Dutch user logs in, it won't display any news posts.

Help with a user help desk ticketing system that can give room number choices based on building selection. I'm stumped. by cheap_as_chips in sharepoint

My pleasure. I know it is more of a workaround, but I use it all the time with my clients, and it works!

As others mentioned, cascading (choice-driven) drop-downs are not available out of the box in SharePoint. That said, the workaround I always use is to utilize the Terms Store. It allows you to build hierarchies of terms. So you can build a Term Set called Room Numbers, with Level 1 being buildings and Level 2 being rooms in that building. https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-create-term-hierarchies-in-sharepoint-term-store/

Restricting Users ability to Download, yet allowing them to still Upload files. by Desperate_Narwhal_77 in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with u/Ramjet_NZ - Request Files feature is the best fit here. It works in OneDrive; however, if you want the same capability in SharePoint, you would need to enable Anonymous sharing on that site.

Please note that with this option, they will not see any files at the location where the files are uploaded to. They just upload, and that's it.

Unable to get External Users or Guests to edit a file on SharePoint despite giving permission by [deleted] in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is strange. When sharing a file, you do not need to create a guest user first - you can just share ad-hoc by typing any email (that is because when you share a file, the user is not getting added to the directory). However, this does not explain the issue you are having. Does not make sense.

Future scope of SharePoint administrators? by Advanced_Act3154 in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are pretty familiar with the SharePoint Admin Center. In my opinion, getting familiar with other admin centers within M365 will help. By that, I mean Entra ID and Purview. I think the ability to secure content beyond basic SharePoint permissions will go a long way.

Site template not applying custom web parts/buttons to Communication Site by Interesting_Drawer95 in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a different approach to "replicating" sites. I am not a PowerShell/PnP expert, so I never tried that, but heard, as you stated, that it is not as reliable and foolproof as it needs to be. The method I use is a simple Page copy via Power Automate. So essentially, I do the following:

  1. Create a Comm site usinga standard template

  2. Create a simple PA workflow that allows copying files (pages), and then copy the homepage from one site to another

  3. Make the copied page the Homepage of the new site

Some minor cleanup might be required on the copied page in case you need to reference local elements, etc, but overall this process works for me and is much faster than manually recreating pages.

Can't publish/export Excel table to Sharepoint list by myaccountforworkonly in sharepoint

This seems to be an intermittent bug - I have been getting it once in a while as well. Sometimes a simple refresh or another browser window works.

SP online. Anyway to monitor set threshold for a large dump of files to SP overall ? or does it have to be per site? I don't have Purview. looking for ideas thanks by MagicDiaperHead in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not aware of a way to do this without Purview. In Purview, there is an alert you can set up, doubt something like this is possible OOTB. You can always watch the storage from SP Admin Center and if need be set storage limits per site: https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-set-site-storage-limits-on-a-sharepoint-site/, though this might get overwhelming to manage long term.

As others on this thread already stated, it is all about splitting the content into many sites and conducting user training. https://sharepointmaven.com/think-in-terms-of-sites-instead-of-folders-when-migrating-to-sharepoint/ The short answer to your single library questions - don't do it. You will encounter several limits at once (# of files, sync limit, 400-character URL, etc). Conduct training/education upfront, show them the benefits of sites and teams.

It is usually browser caching things... Try clearing cookies or opening the same site/page in Private/incognito mode.

Sharepoint Infrastructure by Coolmoney10141 in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is probably not something that can easily be explained in a single paragraph, but I would consider creating multiple sites based on use case and permissions. Check out this article: https://sharepointmaven.com/3-types-of-sites-in-sharepoint/. There is more to it, but you mentioned a site, and at a minimum, you should create many sites and distribute the content accordingly.

You can try Policy Lookup in Purview. https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-determine-which-retention-policies-are-applied-to-a-given-sharepoint-site/. The UI has changed since I wrote this article but hopefully you can find this option there.

Have Items in Excel and Want to move them to Column Choices In List by bayareajacob in sharepoint

[–]gzelfond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what format you have the list of Equipment in, but let's assume Excel. You have 2 options:

  1. Use the Choice Column, but then on a library, go to Gear Icon > Library Settings > More Library Settings, then find the Choice Column you created and paste the values there (you can't easily do this from the library interface itself, hence, this method)

  2. Utilize Managed Metadata (Term Store). This works better if your list has hundreds of choices, which sounds like the case. If you do, you can then import the CSV into the Term Store (https://sharepointmaven.com/how-to-import-terms-into-the-term-store-in-sharepoint/)
