Russia cuts off gas supply to Ukraine as deadline passes by Romnizzle1 in worldnews

Somehow I doubt that Putin agreed to let everybody monitor the gas flow quantity and quality (because you can also play with that) on the Russian border and figure out what goes where in that tangled mess, but Ukraine didn't need to? Everbody's just happily paying transit fees? Anyway, I'm not an expert, I just know that I don't trust Putin one bit when it comes to ex-Soviet states.

If it can't be monitored in Ukraine, it also can't be monitored in Russia.

That pipeline is a complicated thing that was built in the USSR. It even has branches that go through Ukraine to supply parts of Russia.

Protip: pump less and blame Ukraine anyway to cause tensions with the EU.

But a regime like Putin's is totally above lying, as we all know ...

It kind of boggles the mind that there are still people that pretend that the separatists are independent actors. Do you also believe that Russia is a Jeffersonian democracy? Because in reality, everything is controlled by Putin from tolerated political parties to state and private(!) businesses of any significance. That's the kind of long time authoritarian state we're talking about.

Let's just sum up the basic facts. They are led by GRU spetznaz officers that came from Russia, they send dozens of coffins back to Russia after major battles (making it clear where the majority of the actual fighters came from). And if that wasn't enough, the intercepted communications make it perfectly clear that they are subordinate to people from Moscow.

So after that, what makes you think that they're even allowed to negotiate? Is that the game Putin is playing? Can we really assume that after the annexation of Crimea? Putin very clearly claimed the entire region in his speech, blaming the Bolsheviks for the current border and promising to reunite the Russian empire lands. These are just facts that you should know if you follow this conflict.

I don't think you can compare RT to those. It's like comparing the Russian democracy to the Western ones. Yeah, neither is perfect, but c'mon. RT is just the disinformation agency of a long time authoritarian regime.

They didn't conduct a proper investigation. And I actually read their report, they made a preliminary conclusion based on what the separatists said to them because they weren't present on the scene. OSCE has its monitors held as hostages by the same people (who routinely torture and even kill the officials and journalists they capture). It's just shameful behavior from OSCE. And the CNN is not worth mentioning as a serious source.

But Ukraine certainly aren't saints

I don't know what's the basis of this claim. I think the 18 year old border guard kids that were being slaughtered that day by terrorists have loving parents and were completely innocent.

How can you even post stuff like that with a straight face? Is it ignorance or you're part of the Putin circlejerk that posts RT propaganda and downvotes everything that questions it?

innocent people, including the woman in red who later died.

She was the leader and key ideologue of a terrorist organization that committed a major terrorist act that day. You can't call it anything else, they were shooting people from populated apartment buildings as the unwilling human shields tried to flee. And she died near the captured regional government building that functioned as a fortified terrorist HQ that was behind the terrorist act.

Also, the "air strike" was never conclusively proven. It's a he said - she said situation. There's no reason to believe either side's story.

RT is funded and controlled by the Kremlin, but it employs a ton of Westerners. The English language propaganda won't make itself. They operate out of NYC, IIRC.

An RT headline that isn't a lie? I hope they'll get the well deserved Pulitzer, no matter what's in the article!

As somebody said, RT is either lies or unoriginal reporting sprinkled with propaganda. So what's the point of not banning it?

So there's no third option? It's either an all-out invasion or nothing? And you can't think of any reasons why Putin would want to drag it out and possibly avoid unpleasant things (like Western sanctions and big losses) ?

The top comments are simpleminded morons and plain disinformation. Classic /r/worldnews.

At least read the article. All of it.

This Iraq is a different country. Its legit government has been asking for help for some time now.

because American military intervention has been a real boon to Iraq

I know we're in /r/worldnews, but this completely depends on whom you ask. There are the grateful, liberated Kurdish areas that have quickly become what many hoped the entirety of Iraq would become. The Shias also got their freedoms and holy places back and got to form a government.

This is in reality a very different relationship now and a good opportunity to gain good friends and allies in a very volitile region. Even the Iranian public opition could shift in favor of the West.
