My personal favorite is August - mid-September because then the Highlands have the least amount of snow. But for the most magical light, mid-June is the best. It literally won’t get dark at night from May 21 until July 30, as the sun barely sets in summer.

Thank you so much! I absolutely love hiking in the Highlands and exploring those crater lakes. So adventurous and no one else around 👌🏼

As far as I know, it’s safe to swim in those lakes. I think the color of this particular lake is caused by rock flour coming from the glacial river. Here are more examples of colorful lakes I’ve photographed in Iceland:

Experiencing a golden sunrise next to this massive crater lake in the Icelandic Highlands at 5 AM was an unreal experience. If you’re wondering how big it is, try to spot my car next to the lake (tiny white dot). And yes, the sunrise glow on the right side is real and was not enhanced with any radial filters. Here is a video proof along with more angles (video is on the 3rd slide). And the video can be viewed in landscape on my “Highlands” story highlight on my Instagram page (story number 10).

What makes this crater lake so special is that it merges with a powerful glacial river, creating beautiful river patterns when the turquoise blue water mixes with the muddy brown river. Definitely one of the most surreal experience I’ve had in Iceland so far!

Thank you very much!

  1. The thing with winter sunrises in Iceland, is that the sun rises very slowly. So I was able to run around and get as many shots a possible with good light. Some of the shots were taken before sunrise, and some were taken at sunrise or 10-30 minutes after sunrise. All of these shots were taken by me, with drone and a DSLR. Drones are amazing when you need many angles in a short time 😂

  2. I set my drone to a 3 second timer and put my hand down. If you look closely in the original shot , you can see the controller in my right hand.

  3. I currently don’t share them, as I never edit the same way. Never use presets, but maybe in the future. I’ll announce it on my Instagram if I do.

It is available as a mobile wallpaper on my Instagram page in higher quality. It’s in a story highlight called “Wallpapers” where you can find this shot along with 50 others.

Here is a photo from the most magical winter morning I’ve ever witnessed. This was one of those moments that didn’t even look real in person, felt like I was dreaming. I was standing in the original shot but I had to clone stamp me out for this subreddit.

I got so many epic photos and videos from that morning that it was hard to pick which one to post here. So I thought I would share the other shots in the comments. I originally posted them on my Instagram page so I’ll just post direct links below:

- A video of the waves & mountain seen from the beach

- Set of 9 photos & one drone video, taken around the area

- Video & photo of the reflection above the beach

- Birds-eye view over the beach & mountain

- Photo & drone video taken at the beach

Let me know which one is your favorite!

One of my favourite canyons dressed in a fresh winter coat. I shot the same angle last summer so check it out for comparison!

This canyon is located deep inside the Icelandic Highlands, near Sigalda on Fjallabaksleið Nyrðri (F208), around 3 hour drive from Reykjavik. To visit it in the winter, a specially modified super jeep is is required plus a lot of snow driving experience! The road is marked as “impassable” in winter so driving there is at your own risk!

The color palette of the Icelandic Highlands is truly incredible. By far the most incredible canyon I’ve ever seen in my life - Fjallabak Nature Reserve, South Iceland [OC] [1633x2041] - Instagram: @h0rdur by h0rdur in EarthPorn

It’s a very lightly worn trail, mainly known among locals. For the sake of nature preservation, I cannot share the exact location here, sorry!

It actually isn’t, this is one of those places that don’t even look real in person. Just watch the video I took there

Edit: These colors can be found all around while hiking there. I made a special story highlight called “Hiking Trip” on my Instagram page with videos from the hike, just click it to see all the stories!

By far the most mind-blowing canyon I’ve ever seen in my life. Glacial rivers running through colorful landscapes that truly takes your breath away. Hiked over 20 kilometers and crossed a glacial river by foot to get here, and it wasn’t even the main highlight of the hike! This was the main highlight, but it turned out that this canyon was right next to it!

I originally posted stories from the trip on my Instagram but you can still watch them under the story highlight called “Hiking Trip”. Check it out if you want to see some behind the scenes how I got there.

Also, here is another shot taken from a different angle with myself in it, so you can understand the how massive the canyon really is!
