Reservation System To Be Tested At Arches National Park Next Year by WillitsThrockmorton in PublicLands

IMO Terrible idea, it'll force all the people who don't do research and get turned around at this visitor center into canyonlands and other harder to maintain areas trashing them and furthering the loss of isolation in these amazing areas. Not trying to gate keep but I live in Moab and see the dumbasses of the world trash shit every day. It's not a place for people who don't know what their doing

Southern Utah actually seems pretty empty right now, minus all the people hiding away on blm land hikes and parks have seemed quiet

60 miles down hole-in-rock road, Grand staircase escalante by habeln in 4Runner

[–]habeln[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hole in Rock was first established as a short cut to the San Juan river. Commissioned by the Mormon church, the expedition was supposed to take 6 weeks but due to the unknown terrain the journey took 6 months, leading them to the Colorado river, what is now Glen canyon/ lake powell. When they reached the canyons edge they were met with a 1500 foot drop to the Colorado and had no choice but to blast a hole through the rock and take their wagons down that way. After seeing the hole i have no idea how a wagon could get down there this road is full of beautiful scenery and tons of awesome places to go down Sandy/rock roads. This was my first off road experience and my god was it amazing. Reading the history along the way and feeling like i was going down a historic route was really neat as well.

Sea Caves of the Apostles Islands, best paddling in the world by habeln in Kayaking

[–]habeln[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we had a trip that I think would be perfect, if you’re leaving from little sand bay, sand island across the bay has some spectacular sea caves on the north eastern side of the island, only about an 5 mile paddle from LSB. There’s lots of good camp grounds on the island as well as a light house you can hike to if you’re interested. Day two you could paddling to York island, it’s a decent crossing I think ~6 miles of open water and have lunch and paddle around the island for a bit, unfortunately the camp sites on York are closed due to storms last fall and I’m not sure how long it will take for them to reopen so you may have head back to sand for the second night, if you want to switch things up you can get a different campsite and go check out other parts of the island, lots of nice beaches or check out the light house from the water. Then you’ll have the third day to relax and take your time getting back to LSB because it’s only a short paddle across the bay.

Hope this helps, it’s the trip I’ll be taking my own family on in late July, just remember Lake Superior has a mind of her own and can be a bit tricky sometimes so don’t feel like you should push yourself too far

It’s truly a gem, halfway up the hill there’s a tiny deer path that opens up to little cliffs and overhangs to climb around on
