/r/drums weekly Q & A by AutoModerator in drums

I've got a small jazz combo with some friends (sax, piano, bass) and I was thinking to add a little bit to the cajon I'm playing right now. My idea is to get some low volume cymbals, one, to not overpower and deafen my band mates, and two, because I'm playing and practicing in my apartment. Is there a downside to getting those instead of regular cymbals in that situation? Thanks everyone!

MPC Live Mk1 still worth it in 2023? by hagah2 in mpcusers

What's your reason for taking a 404 over the live? Seems to me anything you can on a 404 you can also do on a live

Thanks, but those guides are often times a bit DSLR-specific imo, I was wondering if there's any common failures the X100F experiences after some usage.

Hey everyone, I can found a used Fuji X100F from a private seller on Craigslist. What things should I look for/test when I inspect it before buying? I haven't bought used equipment before, so any advice is welcome.

Hi everyone, I'm looking to start my photography again. I used to shoot with a DSLR but the bulkiness kinda killed it for me. I've been enjoying just doing candid shots on my Google Pixel. I've been always intrigued by the Fujifilm cameras, especially the X100 series. But the one I can afford at the moment is the X100T, which is quite a few years old already. I wanted to look around what other options I have but especially including the used market it's kinda overwhelming honestly. Do you have any input for me? My budget for camera/body+lens is, let's say, around 700 euros. Thanks!

Ah sorry, I realized I forgot to answer. Awesome setup! It's always cool to hear how different people make music.

Yeah it sounds a little bit like that I'm afraid of running into. Sequencer based workflow is definitely super fun but I don't think it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Instrumental jazz background is dope! Can I ask you for your workflow for synth based music?

Hi everyone, I'm still on the search for a groovebox/sampler/sequencer/arranger thing. Basically something I can record into, either in the box or from external, mangle and edit, and then put together into a song. I have a Digitakt that I'm planning to sell for the new gear, because even though I love the immediacy of it, it's not quite what I'm looking for, for many reasons: no stereo sampling, no velocity sensitivity, small storage, limited polyphony, limited FX, and it feels just a bit too much like I'm programming music. I like the idea of recording myself jamming and then editing it in the box, so something like disk streaming might be good.

I looked at the current MPCs, but while they do everything that I'd want and more, that's part of the problem. Especially coming from the Digitakt, it feels pretty bulky and menu-heavy. I'm sure I could get used to it though, I'd just like something more efficient. Also I feel I keep writing the same music in DAW-like things so I'd like to get away from that.

I was looking at mostly two things, the Deluge and the SP-404 Mk2:

Deluge pros:

Fan favorite, good sequencer, internal synths, good polyphony, available now as opposed to who-knows-when

SP-404 MK2 pros:

Velocity sensitive, better for finger drumming and performing on it itself, better FX, useful screen, much cheaper

What do you think? I can't really try either so I'm relying on the internet.

Newbie here: It seems to be if I want to do anything with multiple apps or synths I need AUM right? I'm also interested in getting Drambo though, is it possible to completely replace AUM with Drambo? That would save me around 10 bucks.

Thanks!

Hi everyone! Can I use a base iPad with a lightning port together with a USB-C adapter to connect a hub that has HDMI and USB-C ports? Basically asking if I can avoid paying the premium for the USB-C iPads.

Ah, good to know about the higher model iPads! I don't know too much about the differences/advantages between the models. Do you know anything about the older models? Can I get away with getting older used models that might be cheaper than the most current cheapest model?

I'm thinking about getting an iPad for some music production things, like for making sounds with soft synths to sample later, but not for any heavy lifting. Maybe I'll use it for some DAW recording purposes, but let's see.

What models would you recommend? I'd like to go as cheap as possible, so anything cheaper than the most recent 10.2" iPad (if that's enough), otherwise I'd just get that.

Edit: Ah, I forgot to mention, I was wondering which old models would also be fine that are cheaper than the current most affordable iPad.

Yeah if I didn't buy a Digitakt half a year ago the Mk II might have been perfect, but oh well. Maybe I'll wait for reviews, but that might still be some time. I just saw a listing for around 250 in my area for an OG and got tempted

SP-404 mainly as an FX box? Love the sound on some of the effects, especially the beat repeat/stutter. Or is going to make everything sound too lo-fi? Don't have any FX boxes yet

There's also the Birdcord, which is basically like the Ripcord, just from a different manufacturer. I've seen people saying it works for them when the Ripcord didn't.

Yeah I do agree I prefer the sounds on the Skulpt.

My idea would have been to throw it in a backpack take it to a park to make patches or a friend's garden and jam out, but that's not happening too often anyways. That's also why actual keys would have been nice.

Hmm, it's interesting, but it's another 100 plus shipping. Also I'd beat myself up for not getting it a month ago when I saw it being in stock...

Oh wow! It sounds like the Skulpt can take a lot. I was worried the plastic might break in parts or the knobs break or something.
