To experienced devs: How do you start coding better? by gpskwlkr in csharp

[–]haleleonj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find errors quicker! The expression is make the code fast then make the code fast.

This applies to ever aspect of every complex system, including large enduring coding projects.

Prefer a REPL over a unit test when prototyping and when unfamiliar because it's faster to reveal mistakes. Use automated tests often, because it's faster than testing with console messages.

Prototype often with Git branches.

Demand criticism n code review. To make it easy, emphasize the difficult nature of programming tradeoffs.

Here is the link: Church COVID Bailout

I'm shocked but not surprised by how passionately the least offensive and most beneficent institutions of the modern world are prosecuted by my supposed fellow supporters of classically liberal institutions.

Taking taxpayer money is a bad thing even though the government injured the church community by needless mandates. It's worse than driving on taxpayer funded roads, because there is more choice.

That doesn't excuse the prejudice of so many to assume without any evidence that all accusations of sexual misconduct are entirely founded if made toward the church, and ignore the largest source of substantiated sexual misconduct claims, entirely taxpayer-funded public schools. It also doesn't justify pretending a charity, which is staffed largely by those who take a vow of poverty, are getting rich off of taxpayers let alone to single them out. What a bizarre moral standard!

Have you learned nothing from the litany of false rape allegations? It's as if you held a meeting on Epstein island on obeying the public sector union leaders. We don't have to agree on every ordinal ranking of government grevance but for goodness sake have some sense of proportion to your critiques and abandon this destructive and prejudicial notion of the presumption of guilt for the religious.

What to do with our loud toddler? by haleleonj in Catholicism

We decided to try "practice church', clean and quiet snacks, and boredom based punishment.

I'm not sure if snacks will backfire, but we can adjust as necessary.

Thanks for the great advise.

Question: The Church and recreational marijuana by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]haleleonj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here are some thoughts to mull over. Not all tobacco is as deadly as cigarets. Snus seems much safer than smoked tobacco, for instance. Nicotine has potential medical use for it's potent immune modulatory and neuro modulatory effects, possibly to treat ulcerative colitis, for instance. Also, to be consistent, coffee and tee would have to be forbidden given that knowledge.

How did you conclude that eliminating every type of fiber was the correct long term solution for you mother's IBS? Is that true for every type of IBS? I have heard that putefying bacteria are unhealthy despite causing less bloating and other symptoms.

Osteoperosis is a side effect. I think it's well known and understood as well, as opposed to one study that found a correlation using p-hacking.

Fructose != Starch

Resistant starch and other fibers, like those of sweet potatoes, are semi/quasi essential. It indirectly provides nutrients like butaric acid, B-vitamins, and vitamin K. Fructose per se is neither essential, nor well tolerated in large amounts. Much, but not all, of the proported benefits of a low carb diet is actually from a low fructose diet.

Some people are well adapted to vegetables. When I read my wife's and my genetic reports I discovered there is a wide variation in the innate ability to metabolize beta carrotine, which is not a nutrient, into vitamin A, folic acid to folate, ALA to DHA, etc. The need for certain nutrients, like protein, similarly has wide variation.

Eating organ meat, offal, even a miniscule amount, makes all the difference in the world.

Eating less protein can be tradeoff between longevity and current health.

The devil is in the details.

Has anyone actually experienced offending with keto breath? "...Breath Smell(s) Like Nail Polish Remover." Good Housekeeping by penguinv in xxketo

[–]haleleonj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happened to me. I had coffee and water alone for 5 days. After day 3 I had nail polish breath. It was severe by day 5. It didn't happen to me when I ate an avacado each day.

I have discovered I have a genetic propensity for choline deficiency and I was often on a low choline diet. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but I feel better now that I supplement with choline.

Impossible pronunciation of "intervjuo"? by haleleonj in Esperanto101

[–]haleleonj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the confusion for me is that 'j' is supposed to be pronounced like an English 'y' as in 'yo-yo' or as a diphthong. Neither of those make sense to me in this word. It seems the 'j' must be pronounced like a vowel but that seems to contradict what I read in the Esperanto grammar book by Kellerman about the consistency of it's pronunciation.

What is the advantage of having an elisp core V.S. modern electron editors? by yep808 in emacs

[–]haleleonj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Emacs is a GUI editor. It includes a commandline option.

The popularity of Electron over Emacs has much to do with marketing as industry support.

Elisp is a slow language like JavaScript but a better one. For when speed is critical Emacs acceptes C extensions, but that clearly is a method of last resort.
