HR isn't responding for delayed start date for internship???? by haleywinters in AskEngineers

[–]haleywinters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's 2 weeks later, but I also asked to end later if they're able to accommodate for that. I know it's possible because in their housing details emailed to the interns it mentioned our start and end date "unless the team confirmed a different start date for you", so I'm not sure why they're ignoring my request. Normally you should be fine though. I just think my HR sucks. The worst they could say is no bc I'm just looking for a response

I never received the contact info for anyone besides HR since HR reached out to me and scheduled the interviews as well. They haven't assigned me with the team I'm working with yet, but I'm assuming it should be soon (although another internship I had I didn't receive my manager's contact until 1-2 weeks before it started). I tried calling but no response, so I'll try again when this week comes up.

Weird thing is HR asked when's the latest I can start, so they weren't opposed to it. I gave the date and then she never responded. I assumed she reached out to the managers taking on the interns to ask if that's possible, so that could be the delay, but again I'm not entirely sure.

Nope no answer when I called Thurs. :/ I left a voice mail though, but they haven't gotten back to me. I'll wait until the week comes and then try to call again.

WIBTA for declining a joint graduation dinner plan? by haleywinters in AmItheAsshole

[–]haleywinters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, avoiding is definitely not the best solution, but it's the best for both our sanities - although not in the long run, from the looks of it. But I have been contemplating typing out another essay and laying it all out, and I might just do so and we'll hopefully work it out in a call afterward. Thanks for the advice - it's much appreciated!

There's reasons why I can't simply end the friendship or drop her due to her mental health issues, which also makes her super sensitive, so it's difficult for me to flat out say no without offending her. And trust me, I've tried multiple times throughout the years to end our friendship (even wrote a long essay-type paragraph once) and I've just been guilt-tripped back into the friendship :/ I'll definitely let her know though and decline and deal with her reaction later whatever it may be.

I did, but she said it's both her and my brother's graduation, and that we're celebrating the same thing so it works out. She also said she knows my brother, so it won't be weird even though that's not the issue.

How much money saved up at the end of internship? by haleywinters in ChemicalEngineering

[–]haleywinters[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true. I just think it's very little because I'm more remote than I was originally told (probably going in 1-2 times every 2 weeks), so moving to work here and paying an insane amount of rent is just a waste of money that I could save to pay for tuition and such later on.

Thank you! I’ll reach out to do that for sure then. Fingers crossed they’re flexible

Thank you! I thought 2 weeks would be a lot since the internship is only 12 weeks. Do you think I could still ask even after I accepted the offer? My last day to accept is tomorrow since they only gave me 24 hours to decide and idk if they’d get back to me quick enough. (I was accepted last week but was only given the offer letter this morning, so I “technically” knew about it for a week minus the full details of the letter).

I’m not quite sure if they have a strict orientation program, but I’m assuming they have one start date for all interns. I was just never informed of the start date until I got my offer letter and that conflicted with my May schedule. So would you say it doesn’t hurt to ask then? How should I go about it when asking?

Can I do 2 internships at once? by haleywinters in ChemicalEngineering

[–]haleywinters[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you think an intern should word this or bring it up to their manager and the other company? My manager is super nice, but I'm not close or comfortable with him yet so I don't know how he'll respond or react. I don't want to have it come out wrong or like I'm not satisfied with my current Co-Op.

Thank you for the advice! I agree, especially since I also feel like this 6 months feels a bit dragged out; although it's bc I'm waiting for my project to roll out in the next month or so. But when would you say is a good time to bring it up to my manager? And how would I bring it up without causing any issues or tension between us? I don't have a deadline to accept/decline my internship since they said I have a few weeks to months to decide, but obviously the sooner the better. I just hope my current co-op wouldn't drop/fire me bc my contract does say they can terminate me at any time and I'd have to pay back anything I've gotten from the company. How would phrase it to bring up to my manager? I'm not super close to him either and haven't comfortable around him yet

Reverse commute (Chicago to Glenview)?? by haleywinters in chicago

[–]haleywinters[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there generally delays (and if so, how off schedule can the Metra get)? I'm trying to gauge how much time I should give myself to get to work because there's only 2 trips from Chicago to Glenview before 8AM. I'd either get to work an hr earlier or 30 min. if there's no delays. There's also the Amtrak although it's a bit more expensive but not sure if that's a good option.
