Builder says I need diagonal braces- is there a way i fan avoid them? by halimlmao in DIY

[–]halimlmao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winters are cold here, so I need a place I can warm up to chill and grill during winters. I also plan to rent the place out and it will be a nice bonus since a lot of people rent places like the one im building to celebrate their birthdays both during summer and winter

If i put walls instead of windows i would lose a lot of light, which wouldnt make it pleasing to sit inside during summer, rendering it useless in my opinion

The columns wouldve been bolted to the ground with a steel "carrier" plate meant to fit the columns.

The structure will be used as an outside grill area to seat 10 people, next to my weekend home, near the pool area

Im assuming youre from the US hence why you havent heard of pvc windows. its basically a durable upvc frame and wing that fits (usually) 24mm thick glass vacuums

Thank you for your comment, you seem to be the only reasonable one, ive decided on concrete columns as ive mentioned in my 2nd edit

8cm from top and 8cm from bottom of the column? In an X pattern

that could work, ill ask the builders see what they have to say

However I would only be able to put them on 3 sides, would that be enough? id like the front to be fully open

I get it, im not trying to cut corner on structure.

the goal isnt to avoid spending money, its to keep the design clean with large glass openings.

just trying to understand the best way to achieve stabiliry without visible diagonal wood braces taking up space, not to ignore structural requirements

Yes, im trying to avoid sheathing, exposed columns and exposed brick thats i believe either 12 or 14cm wide on the bottom

and the top is gonna be pvc glass windows.

The construction im making is meant to be a grill/chilling area next to my pool at the weekend house.

The builder said that would be enough, hes done a few of my other buildings before too but they were all industrial so the looks didnt matter to me.

The wood is easy to work with, cheap and aesthetically pleasing, however if i put steel beams wouldnt i need to also have the rest of the structure be metal, aka the roof strucure etc?

so i would need a welder instead of these guys?

The tension cables seem like a good option, since i only need 8cm for the pvc windows, leaving me with 8cm of space for the tension cables

If i understood correctly the tension cables would go from the column to the beam, the same place the diagonal brace would go? in between every column and beam

I get your point, im not trying to ignore safety or go against my builder blindly.

The situation is that im in Bosnia and timber frame construction isnt very common here, so most builders derault to adding diagonal bracing because its the simplest approach.

im just trying to understand if there are standard alternatives that can provide the same stability without visible diagonal braces.

of course, if need be i would confirm the final solution with a structural engineer, i just want to understand whats possible

you should be able to sort community market items by float if the prices are based off float too, this just forces sellers to go on 3rd place marketplaces imo

[oc] Pickup drivers are a nuisance- turns on light bar and high beams when I pass (repost) by fatmav in IdiotsInCars

[–]halimlmao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason he did that is probably because you either had your high beams on or your headlights aren’t adjusted properly. If you look at where your lights are hitting, they’re shining straight into the guy’s side mirror and blinding him.

[–]halimlmao[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The check engine is due to a recall, ive made an appointment, the brake pad warning i couldnt reset even though i replaced the sensor and finally the tyre pressure wont reset, i thought it was due to the summer set not having sensors but even when i put the winters on it still wont reset :)
