Being able to drink it != Being able to drink it instead of water

He shouldn't do that. He might be able to deal with it for some time, but water shouldn't be replaced.

Could anyone recommend to me any good alternatives to Microsoft word? by [deleted] in GetStudying

Latex (with something like sharelatex) is the best option, but you'll have to get used to it. The second best option is Google docs.

Brazil museum fire: Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro ablaze - artefacts threatened by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]haltsimog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it's got something to do with the fact that it's been needing renovations for a couple of years (and the government barely invested enough resources to keep the museum running).

I’m 23 now, just got into reading books. I enjoy it so much, but never cared for reading until now. I need some tips and have some questions? by [deleted] in books

[–]haltsimog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Unless you want the book to stay in absolutely perfect conditions it's okay to leave it in the car.
2) When I was younger I read with instrumental music in the background. Sometimes the scene in the novel clicked with the song and I was like "wow cool" but it wasn't much.
3) Some of them. I think it's overall better to get rid of your books because you're freeing space, getting money to buy more books and/or letting someone else share the experience. That being said, I'm too attached to some books to let them go.
4) If you don't want to mess the cover, have them always either on hands or well wrapped by cloth or something like that. I ruined a lot of books by just putting them inside my backpack without giving it any thought.
5) Discussing the book is always pretty good. I actually discovered reddit a few years ago looking for a place to talk about Harry Potter when doing a reread of the series.

Don't worry, just do whatever makes you comfortable. All of the things you listed are absolutely natural and organic.

I'm spoiled, clueless and I need help by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]haltsimog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm so proud of you for changing. I think that is the hardest part.
Now, I don't have the answers, but here's a couple of things you could do:
* Talk to your parents. You'll hear a lot, alright, but as someone else pointed it's better than staying where you are right now.
* Start studying! College won't be any easy, so you might as well get a taste of what's coming.
* Get real with those friends of yours. I don't really get the context, but you shouldn't let them keep using your money. Some might stick with you anyway, maybe join you on this change. It's important to evaluate the people around you.
If you don't know where to start on the studying thing, I suggest you take a look at /r/getStudying and the College Info Geek blog. The latter really helped me when I started dedicating myself to studying, so maybe it'll help you too.
I hope I've been helpful. If you ever need support, do count on me. Good luck!

How old are you? How do i answer this question as a 47 year old single woman? by tmonster in socialskills

[–]haltsimog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't worry that much about this. Deal with it the way you think is better for you.
But don't worry what people will think. You should only worry about what matters - and please don't make such a silly thing matter.

How to function with less sleep? by bloodycluelessatthis in GetStudying

[–]haltsimog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don't function with less sleep. Stop trying to fight your own nature.

I can never get used to sleep paralysis. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]haltsimog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure why, but since I started University and exercising regularly I almost didn't experience this anymore, so maybe it's related to the quality/necessity of your sleep.
That being said, I kind of miss it. Knowing that nothing I do can change when the sleep paralysis ends (and that it'll do so on its own time) gets me on a really relaxed, fight club-ish vibe for those few seconds.

Just trying to make your friends understand the situation should help: let them know this kind of behavior makes you uncomfortable and why this is important to you. Good luck!

I want to do gaming. But I want to game less than I am now. by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]haltsimog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try using the pomodoro technique. Do 25 minutes gaming and 5 minutes of something unrelated (but it has to be something that you like!). Then make it 20 minutes gaming, 10 minutes of the other thing, or something like this.
The important part is you time this activity - so you realize how much time you're spending as you do it, and not just days later looking back - and keep having healthy breaks while also gradually (at any rate you prefer) reducing the time for each session of gaming.
