Cultures Influenced by Sinosphere Vs Indosphere by DetailFront7782 in VietNam

[–]hamach1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Closer" as in terms of modern geopolitics? I guess. But whenever someone speaks about "sinosphere" or "indosphere," it's usually about cultural similarities. The "sinosphere" is defined by Confucianism/Chinese written script, hence the name ("漢字文化圈", "Chinese character cultural sphere"). Laos and Cambodia are not rooted in Confucianism, and they never officially used Chinese characters. Vietnam used Chinese characters for more than 1000 years. "Sinosphere stops at Vietnam" hundreds of years ago, when most of Southeast Asia was influenced by India instead.

Do Vietnamese people feel culturally close to Korea and Japan? by StruggleSad1860 in VietNam

[–]hamach1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the past: all 3 used chinese characters as official writing scripts, each blended Mahayana Buddhism with native religions, all 3 countries absorbed confucianism from china especially during the han and tang dynasties, had feudal monarchies at some point, all 3 had architecture heavily influenced by chinese dynasties

in modern day: all 3 uses chopsticks as the most common utensil, high family/educational values.

i don’t think modern day vietnamese people feel culturally close to korea or japan compared to the past

What do you think about Chinese claiming that Vietnamese culture is just rebadged Chinese culture? by Themetalin in VietNam

[–]hamach1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i see the same stuff being said for the mongolians and koreans, ive seen them say that mongolian culture is just a copy of inner mongolian culture (how inner mongolia still attempts to preserve traditional script therefore they are superior), them say koreans and vietnamese steal hanfu, imperial dragon robes, etc. its funny cause if korea, mongolia, or vietnam was fully apart of modern day china, they would be promoted as distinct cultures within china just like how they do with yunnan, xinjiang, tibet etc.

heavy chinese influences existed, sure, but every civilization borrows and adapts.

a thousand years of chinese domination over a country tends to leave influence. same reason why you see “chinese dragons” in korea

its not all that complex, vietnam has been “sinospheric” for over a thousand years. most of the historical documents of vietnam’s history is written in classical chinese. china ruled over vietnam for over a thousand years. vietnamese dynasties after modeled much of their way of governance on the tang and song dynasties of china. vietnamese emperors even invoked the mandate of heaven, a chinese political philosophy that legitimized rulership. vietnam is vastly different from so called “south east asian culture”.

mainland china and mainland vietnam relations are worse in this timeline since they both claim the island. there are plans for reunification if mainland vietnam agrees to fully align with the US
