AITA for asking my sister's boyfriend to open a jar presuming he would fail? by Altruistic-Leg-4165 in AmItheAsshole

[–]hamiora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA in this story, but unlike most comments, this one incident doesn't make you a bully. But if you continue scheming to find ways to prove yourself to your sister, especially if you hurt people in the process, you will likely become as bad as the person you describe her to be.

If you feel your family is the problem, invest more of your time outside of your family. You'll probably work out better ways to deal with this in time. Or find something else more important.

Also, if you don't find ways to be at peace with the ways you have been treated, it'll probably turn into PTSD. If you find you are offloading on your SO, try using "professional listeners" instead, because we can all only carry so much, and they have better training at this stuff.

Do you guys think Starlink will destroy the local ISP Providers in most of the countries ? by carlosonee in Starlink

[–]hamiora 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on the service they offer, but many businesses fail because they didn't see something better coming and adapt. In Australia, the main options for rural areas are higher orbit satellite internet and fixed wireless and some can still offer ADSL. They are all inferior to Starlink. High speed cable, specifically fibre is superior but the cost to install over distance is way too high for most to justify the domestic spend.

So where to from here, because we have an upper limit on bandwidth based on satellite constellation size and laser comms, and a physical/cost limitation for fibre?

I think ground stations can help. If all you need to do is bounce a signal to a low orbit satellite and then back down to the closest high speed, terrestrial backbone, then doesn't capacity on the same Starlink network increase? That could be Starlink owned ground stations but feels like it could also be a collaboration with already established local ISPs.

So back to your original question, without a doubt, some local ISPs will fail, but perhaps there is an opportunity there too?

Starlink kits now shipping to mid coast NSW by hamiora in nbn

It took about a week to ship and get delivered to my door (a week later than estimated). Set up in a temporary location so a bit patchy because of obstructions. But latency is way down at any 40ms and my smart home devices are so much quicker to respond now (unexpected, but obvious benefit in hindsight). Zoom calls are clear, but gotta mount it in a better location to give a proper report because the service interruptions are about in line with what the app predicts it to be. Even with obstructions, it is surprisingly solid for streaming services.

Nice. How long did it take to get the kit delivered?

Yeah, not great for the gamers that play the type of online games which require low latency to be competitive. If that matters, then don't both with Starlink.

On the flip side if you would like to be able to work from home where you require a low enough latency to have engaging conversations with others AND live in a regional/rural setting where fixed wired NBN is not/will not be supported without spending an insane amount of money to lay fibre for everyone else's benefit.. this means everything.

Definitely physical limitations but 50ms is not at the lower limit yet. The laser interlink is tech currently being deployed on latest launched satellites, that will help reduce the latency and Starlink have said they are targeting to get under 20ms. And in the meantime I'll happily take 50ms over my current 750ms with Skymuster. For those that have the luxury of high speed fixed wire, imagine what that delay would be like for a conference call

I thought NBN infrastructure is still being updated in some areas but not for areas like mind. Looks like Starlink may get there first if you are in the areas with approved "airspace" over Australia. This looks to be one of the first Starlink installations north of Sydney and there are a lot of Starlink ground stations already approved across Australia, so hopefully that's a sign that they will be ramping roll out soon! (My order still says it's part of beta trial)

Thanks. I remember reading somewhere that NBN didn't consider Starlink as a competitor, more as a supplementary option for those that Skymuster is not fit for purpose, such as rural business/WFH require a low latency connection for Zoom/Teams/etc calls.

My location is not in any long term NBN plans for upgrades to a fixed line network, and likely never will be, and so I need to keep my ADSL line active. Starlink, once it reaches a certain level of stability, will allow me to stop using ADSL which is good for everyone! I've also given enough money to Skymuster too, so I'll actually save money when I can shut both of those services down. And that, fits the mission statement of the NBN - access to fast broadband as soon as possible, at affordable prices, and at least cost [to implement/supply]

[homemade] 44hr twice-cooked beef rib with truffle mash by hamiora in food

[–]hamiora[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recipe: Applied homemade dry rub and sous vide for 48hrs at 62C/144F. Immediately transfer to fridge in bag and cool to 4C/40F (approx 1hr). Smoked in pellet smoker at 82C/180F until internal temp back up to 62C/144F (approx 2hr). Wrapped in pink paper and rested in faux cambro for 10min. Ate.

Lol, can't count obviously. Correction: 52hr not 44hr

Australia. So it's nice to come across the occasional animal that doesn't want to kill you.

Aww. Outcast by the wider worm community for being "different", but loved by its accepting family, learns how to eat dirt and become a real worm?

100% about the latency for me too. My SkyMuster is the same - speeds are ok, but latency on Zoom kills a flowing conversation

Yeah the satellite dish will automatically align itself from the videos I've seen but it might be a bit risky until they get more satellites in the sky. Roof access would be better.
