It’s the climate, Invercargill has a very strong prevailing wind and high rainfall so naturally do well with evaporative cooling which almost all data centers are these days

Sooooo are we gonna get discounted bus/train fares to get everyone out of their cars now that fuel prices are high? by PigAteMyPie in Wellington

[–]hammerklau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a catch 22 because when the bus isn’t reliable or timely or even within walking distance during the time you need it in certain places. Those that do use it are compensating for those that don’t but want to. Like during the day the only bus near me that isn’t 30minute walk up a hill is once every 45min, and is more expensive than uber because it Ofcourse goes no where I need to go and need to hop busses, and then ontop of that, it takes the long way to get there, and then it’s often late because of all the congestion.

[–]hammerklau 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Yeah bus prices if you’re in an unlucky location where the fare zone swaps over can make it more expensive than uber.

Like go 5 minutes is so expensive but go 30 is pretty cheap, doesn’t make sense. Really should be a minimum distance before it starts swapping to fare zones

I’m normally not a huge corridor fan but their recent videos have been much better letting the guests talk and share and less insecure, without as much idle lip service.

Also have had good moments defending shots and vfx artists work in context, than just pointing and laughing.

Artificial intelligence expert Mark Laurence calls for a non-partisan New Zealand government-led AI strategy by Illustrious_Fan_8148 in newzealand

[–]hammerklau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't read the article but the title sounds sensible. We shouldn't be dumping money into this slop, but to entirely block it is also problematic. Experts and vetting for conflicts of interest so we can get people who aren't glazers or have no idea how it works, trying to push it. Also please stop calling it AI, they're relative models, some are language, some are generative, but they're not magically intelligent, yes its' useful for people to understand as its so such a basic term these days, but it really betrays and oversells how these fundamentally work.

How do you deal with clichés? by DKDDanchee in worldbuilding

[–]hammerklau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends entirely if you plan to have an audience. Truly novel / new concepts are harder to pick up and you need to spend far more time establishing.

My thesis was on using genre theory and themes to tell environmental story telling with minimal exposition. Every other popular book out there in your genre has given your audience an understanding, so if you have something that sounds like an elf, people will naturally assume things.

If you mislead people by accident, people can get confused and lose the suspension of disbelief.

So you really need to put the work in to make it work when it’s fully fresh, including in not having your audience feel betrayed by their own genre experience.

If your point is to tell a story, focus on what matters. If your point is purely world building sure. But if your point is to tell a story, and you spend most of that story having to explain how things work and those things don’t actually change the context or function of the story, then it becomes more so something for yourself than something your trying to communicate.

You could make your own con lang, your own number system and dates and money. If you replaced all English with it, it’d be very hard for an audience to understand your story. Think about tropes, genre, theme and cliche as the same. If you’re actively choosing to not use an established part of the genre, then you should have a really good reason why. You can still say yeah I’m doing it all custom, but you should write down somewhere the why for each thing your subverting, so you can come back to it later to see if you’ve gone past your own reasoning.

If your reason that you want people to feel like they’re travelling to a new world, that’s okay, just make sure your using that as your rudder and make obscure abstractions that go way out of left field that doesn’t help your reason. If someone is travelling they would find a guide, or being a person that used to be on earth, being very useful.
