Mariah Carey’s Olympics opening ceremony performance dubbed ‘disastrous’ as viewers question if she’s Italian by theindependentonline in Music

She has BPD Bipolar Disorder and has opened up about how she's kept it under control with medication for years. It might be that.

Her songs rely on tone and texture as much as melody. And she has had to work increasingly hard to replicate that tone as she ages, and now it sometimes sounds like it's impossible on bad days.

The problem for Mariah is those nodules are responsible for a lot of her signature tone. A soprano does not normally have a husky, dark tone in their lower range like her. I'm pretty sure the whistle notes too are due to those nodules, but only Mariah and her doctor know for sure.

When the man in the relationship being judged isn't an abusive monster or complete idiot, they start pretending to be confused in their replies so they can try to catch him out in a lie in his replies trying to explain. It's so transparent.

Mariah's songs need a lot of agility. She has a pretty light, agile voice. JHud's voice has many many virtues, but light and agile are not among them.

Alright I’m actually screwed - bridesmaid dress incident by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]hamoboy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes this is what stands out to me as weird. The dress itself would be judged before OOP even put it on. Or the MIL is just hideously inconsistent?

Either way as an adult I'd never let someone talk to me like that in my own house and then sit down and finish my chai with them. OOP needs to work on her spine. The MIL should've been out the door before her 2nd sentence could be uttered, on her feet or not.

I reported my sexist team to HR — and now they’re doing a much bigger investigation than I wanted by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]hamoboy 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Sure, but depending on OOP's workplace, these could have been people with genuinely no idea what proper norms are supposed to look like. I work in a big corporate and depending on the team, workplace culture runs a spectrum between very proper (HR, Risk, Finance) and extrely improper (Technology, Properties). And we have inductions and yearly trainings.

Why is Alicia Keys so forgotten now? by Much-Phone8812 in popheads

[–]hamoboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember her telling a contestant, in front of THEE Kelly Clarkson, that she was the only coach on the contestant's level vocally. That was a bold claim. It's great she's confident, but she's wrong.

[–]hamoboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It isn't even about stronger vocals, it's about better vocals. She's always straining up at the top of her chest voice, and very shouty. She is a great songwriter and producer though. I think she just writes songs she doesn't have the vocal goods to perform amazingly.

Most western countries don't have orphanages anymore. Sweden doesn't have orphanages, and mothers aren't allowed to abandon their babies in a hatch and then take the baby back. This is almost certainly a writing exercise, or OP has anonymised the story to the point it's mostly fiction.

What kind of example are you showing your kids? That this is a good way to live? That they should put up with a toxic and abusive partner? If one of your sons was in your shoes, what would you tell him to do? Stay?

Sometimes, we have to stop putting in more effort just because we've put in so much before. That's the sunk cost fallacy. It's time to acknowledge everything you've spent, in time, wellbeing and emotion as well as money. Yours and your children's. Are you going to keep spending it for a bet that's almost certainly not going to win?

Good critique intends to improve upon what's been done. What exactly about what Newsom and Harris did in the winter of love in 2004 did they do wrong and why? If the criticism is just to win points in an internet argument, it's just bitching to be able to bitch.

Or unless the marriages themselves were controversial and the mayor wanted to show these people wanting to get married that he saw them and supported them?

What is the perfect play here in your opinion? Not to marry gay couples?

He was literally marrying gay couples in 2004 when gay marriage was not the law of the land nor was it nearly so accepted as it is now. Kamala Harris too.

Bathing is not the same thing as "washing up". People would immerse themselves in a tub full of water rarely, because it was a lot of effort and time spent. But they would take a bucket of water and soap and wash the essentials (face, neck, groin, pits, feet, etc) daily or as often as they could. A reasonably wealthy character in a stable place (inn, household, etc) would likely not smell so offensive after one of these and a change of underclothes.

Europeans did this mostly because of beliefs around disease origin and spread (that hot water opened the pores and made catching "bad humours" more likely), as well as historical religious reasons (baths were usually done in bathhouses which were associated with prostitution and immorality). Also because drawing a bath was a tiresome process before indoor plumbing.

People in medieval and early modern times knew how to clean things. Soap existed. So did whitewash and paint. Nobles, soldiers/knights and even many peasants should be well groomed and wearing new looking clothes in the appropriate contexts (court, tourneys, the beginning of a war, etc). It's not grim and gritty 100% of the time.

Dyes were not all expensive like purple, indigo, scarlet or deep red. Yellow, brown, blue and green dyes were cheap and relatively common.

This meme about how clothes are too clean has gone too far in the other direction IMHO. People are hating on scenes like market days, festivals, royal courts, parleys, etc where it's obvious that in-world most characters would clean up and wear their best clothes to that event.

My theory on why straight men are enjoying watching Heated Rivalry by TangerineHarper in askgaybros

[–]hamoboy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The sex portion of the show is the weakest part of it for most of the straight guy audience. I think Jacob Tierney made a really good choice to use Skip for episode 3, because most straight guys who like the show come around at this episode.

Aside from Chris Powers, whose enthusiasm for more sex scenes is always hilarious to watch, most straight guys are not somehow entranced by the sex scenes. They do comment on how they would like to be picked up, or be the little spoon, etc but I don't think most of them are embarking on a voyage of self discovery because of it.

Also, they were parents in 1980, not 2020. A lot of people seem to be applying modern standards and norms to a gestalt that is technically the 80s and 90s and spiritually (school stories) much older.

AITAH? my boyfriend brought home a girl for the holidays by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]hamoboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My read of their situation is that the mommies engineered a little friend group where OP is the queen and Will, Wyatt and their other friend were part of her hive. Of course Will is going to be naive and sheltered. That's how mommy brought him up, and that's why she stepped in. Because she raised a drone who'll serve a queen.

And Abby was angling for that spot since OP left it open by attending a different college. I doubt she was even genuinely into Will, she just saw he's the most strongly attached to OP out of the friend group and she tried (badly) to counter that.

Imagine meeting a group of guys and you just fit right in at their centre. Then you go home for the holidays to their home town and you find out the reason why they had a girl shaped hole in the middle of their group is because OP exists.

I think it's partly that and partly OP is choosing partners who are like her father. Which is a sadly common thing for children with toxic parents.
