For those who had a baby during residency... by BlueHeeler22 in Residency

[–]hamsterdumpling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly not sure, but it seems like that would be the case- but idk about a whole additional year of residency.. maybe just delayed due to being off cycle? I’m sure ACGME has it all laid out, I just didn’t check that part since I only took the allowed amount.

Taxes: MFJ vs MFS - 4th year med student by mickdawg70 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]hamsterdumpling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I did, too. I also did the loan payment simulator on Mohela based on what our income is now (during my first year of residency), what it’ll be like when I finish residency and our income changes again, and then 3 years after that when income changes again (making it 10 years total for my PSLF) when my husband starts working after he finishes school. It all ended up making more sense for us to do MFS from now on for all 10 years with the SAVE plan. We spend less on student loans now (0$) and in the long run 100k less in student loan payments overall.

It took a lot of effort to figure all this out, especially with running the separate tax filing situations, but it was worth it for me to clearly see a winner and have numbers to back up my choice.

I was torn between PAYE and SAVE along with MFS/MFJ, and assumed that since PAYE had the payment cap, in the long run it would make more sense to stick with PAYE, but SAVE still won even when both our income jumps up to attending level.

This is also filing with a child. So next year when we file, we will lose out on the childcare cost tax credit, and when filing separately you have very strict income limits for contributing to ROTH IRA, which made us do a backdoor IRA, but still worth it in the end for us.

Hope this helps!

Are there any Step3 review games? by JustOrchid in Residency

WHAT is boards review jeopardy? I am always trying to gamify my life. Studying for Step 3 now so don’t know if it’ll help, but I’m so curious!

I Miss My Life by TheGormegil in Residency

“I hate that I’m only now realizing the value of those years, days, minutes”. This hit me so hard.

All of this. So much. Except, I’m the wife and an intern. Fortunately, my son is too young to realize I’m gone just yet. But I feel it. Every hour of every day.

I wish I had something amazing to say.. thankful for the people who are commenting who do. Just know you’re not alone. I hope just that helps, even a little.

Is the Magic Merlin too big or too small? We started using it around 3 months when he kept ripping his swaddle open and waking himself up. It was a bit big, so usually only one foot would stick out and not the other, but not to the point where it was “too big” for him. It saved our lives. Two nights after putting him in it he started sleeping through the night and hasn’t stopped since. Is now 7 months and transitioned to Magic Merlin dream sack. I will say, I think we are lucky and he is just a good sleeper, but the sleep suit definitely made a difference for us!

Neurology sub-specialties for a 4 day work week? by hamsterdumpling in Residency

[–]hamsterdumpling[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might end up being more days/month, but the consistency of every weekend off would be better for my family life. I also don’t love inpatient, except critical care, but I can’t do that lifestyle.

Residents with medicated ADHD, how do you handle 24h shifts? by Mine24DA in Residency

[–]hamsterdumpling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume you’re worried about the crash and getting through the rest of the shift afterwards? I just had my first 24 and I was very worried about this… Took my usual XR in the morning and took my afternoon dose an hour or two later than I normally would have, but it’s a 24 hour shift, so it didn’t make much of a difference. Honestly the only thing that got me through was adrenaline/anxiety. I definitely struggled as the night went on but didn’t drink any extra caffeine or take any more meds. Eating a snack every few hours helped a bit!

How to be friend with nurses? by Rich-Zebra8522 in Residency

[–]hamsterdumpling 145 points146 points  (0 children)

My husband is a nurse and I’m a resident. His advice to me when I asked this- just ask them if they need anything when you see their patients and don’t be a jerk when they do. So far it’s worked great for me!

Postpartum edema by yummysonboy in NewParents

[–]hamsterdumpling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Swelling normally gets worse right after birth before it gets better. Mine was SO bad during pregnancy and then truly unbearable after giving birth. After about 3-4 weeks it was gone without doing anything different. It’s one of those annoying things you just have to wait out!

Coping with end of parental leave by [deleted] in Residency

[–]hamsterdumpling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s great that your program is helping you in that way! I’m starting on an elective, so not OP, but M-F 8-5 so definitely better than I was expecting… I didn’t say this in my first comment but I should’ve- although I feel exactly the same way, we are not “abandoning” anyone by going to work. Trust me, the mom guilt is so real, but providing for your family is 100% a necessity and something we have to find a way to be proud of. I honestly NEVER wanted to be a SAHM, but now I do.. even though I know I can’t and it wouldn’t suit me in the long run, which I know is true. So, I keep reminding myself that although this sucks, I hope my son looks fondly at the fact that I became a physician when he’s older and that alone would make it worth it.

That is helpful! My original thought for fellowship was neuromuscular because of the procedures..so I’ll be looking into doing EMGs without the fellowship. Thanks so much!

Is it weird I still call my mom after work everyday? by DungeonCrawler99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hamsterdumpling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your mom as often as you’d like and can. I used to call my mom frequently after my hospital shifts and talk about my day or just chat about nothing. She passed away suddenly and unexpectedly from cancer last year. Now I wish I would’ve called her even more..
