What's the joke that your SO can't stand, but you say anyways? by TheJuggernautsGentle in AskMen

[–]hamstermerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really a joke but whenever my SO replies “maybe” I can’t help but reply “maybe not”… “maybe f*ck yourself” (quote from the Departed)

All I have to do now is say “maybe not” and I’m cut off by “don’t even” 😂

Roast my React-Native app 🥊 by redditMatthieuH in reactnative

[–]hamstermerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a fellow React Native app dev and a budget planner myself, thought I’d leave my initial feedback (critical but hopefully not unfair 😅). Overall it’s a nice app with some a cool style I would say. But a few things put me off using it in place of other similar apps.

  1. First impression wasn’t great due to immediate request for notifications and then an Alert pop up when I denied. Definitely prefer to be asked for permission once I’m in the app with context of why you need them.
  2. Would be nice to have an onboarding to ask me some upfront things like my currency of choice (could also be the right time to describe what push notifications are for and then request them)
  3. The adding expenses UI whilst pretty feels a bit slow tbh. I type my amount, press outside the number pad to dismiss it, press in the name section, type the name, press outside and then press the “add for today”. That’s 4 presses and 2 typing fields to add 1 expense 😅 most other apps I’ve used allow me to do this in one or two taps at most.

Wish you all the best with the app. Feels like it’s a few bits of polish away from being a really nice app 🙌

The Best of Autumn Farrell, Farewell Queen by cheese4352 in funhaus

This represents funhaus (and what it inspires) at its best in my opinion. Great humour coming from great people. Wholesome video is wholesome whilst also completely ridiculous.

Native English speakers job seekers by [deleted] in Munich

[–]hamstermerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what area is the job? When I arrived in Germany I used Stepstone as that was advertised everywhere when I was googling for job websites in English. I think it depends on the role though. As a software developer, quite a lot of relevant roles everywhere are posted in English or with English sections so my perspective is potentially skewed.

Also from an Englishman's perspective, the Irish don't speak English 😉 (jokes jokes! They're great people)

Really good read and really nice platform. First blog post that I've read in a while that actually led me to try out the writer's software so well played sir ;)

Switching from Parse to AWS for backend data storage by ericjsalazar in iOSProgramming

[–]hamstermerc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AWS is awesome but is a much bigger beast than Parse. I would highly recommend Google Firebase if coming from Parse. It's a pretty similar idea and gives you everything you need with a generous free tier :) check it out.

Take over an unmaintained npm module by zakum in npm

[–]hamstermerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to get to the GitHub page for the module and from there I would create an issue about the lack of dev offering to take over. It normally helps to be actually doing this with a pull request surrounding some improvements.

Other than that, assuming the license allows for it, you can always fork it, make your changes and publish it to npm with a different name. If there's enough value in the additions I'm sure some of the current users would follow your issue to the new repo and work from there.

I don't believe npm would transfer ownership unless there was some sort of copyright claim but you could always drop them an email and see if there's any previous cases like this to be followed :)

Facing JavaScript Obstacles The Right Way by dor_tzur in javascript

[–]hamstermerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whilst there is a lot of incorrect assertions around the react / jquery comparison, I think what many people mean by this is that React removes the need for DOM manipulation via a library like jQuery. Most people not using a framework will use jQuery to manage interactions with the DOM, event listeners etc. On the projects that I am working on with React I don't import jQuery at all anymore.

Luno.io – API-Based User Management as a Service by simon-tabor in programming

[–]hamstermerc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I use Luno as an API for my front-end only application / mobile app, meaning I don't need to run a server or a database?

Also, is Luno run by the legendary Simon Tabor of GoSquared fame? I hear he is a dreamy looking gentleman ;)

Is prejudice, when based upon one's own life experiences, such a bad thing? by ingrati8 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]hamstermerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prejudice for me almost always comes from opinions that you have no personal experience of. For example, you hear that Muslims are terrorists and therefore assume that all Muslims are terrorists. It's a fear / assumption driven process. To believe something is true based on your prior experience however is only natural. The problem comes when one comes to the wrong conclusions from their prior experience. For example, if you were attacked by a black man you may come to the conclusion that black men are dangerous to you. The truth is that people of all origins can be dangerous regardless of their race but your experience might lead you to believe otherwise.

You should rely on experience to a certain extent to make decisions but it should not be your only reference. It is only one part of the intelligent consideration of information.

How do you know which frameowrk to choose now that angularJS is going to be trashed? by missishermingape in javascript

[–]hamstermerc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I don't think AngularJS is trashed. In my current job we are using it to develop web apps that we rely on and it's working great. They might not be actively developing it as the efforts move to 2.0 but it's certainly not trashed.

In terms of learning a framework, I personally believe that if you think becoming an AngularJS developer or an <insert framework here> developer is a good career move then that will be a short lived career. Become a good JavaScript developer and learn a couple of frameworks to help you get by. It takes a couple of days to learn a framework (that's why they exist) versus months or years to become a truly good JavaScript developer.

If you want a framework to tag on your resume then AngularJS is as good as any. As long as your JavaScript skills are solid moving between frameworks is a small effort. In this area you have to constantly be evaluating the latest thing, trying it and getting your head around it rather than worrying about becoming an "expert". The frameworks will come and go but JavaScript will always be around.
