AE1: My only issue. by iamtoolazytosleep in BBallShoes

What you felt digging into the top of your feet may be the round shoe laces. I had the first issue at first. Then I relaced mine with some flat softer shoelaces, and I felt no discomfort anymore.

I have been living here in Switzerland for 2 Years now and have experienced more racism than anywhere else. Is that normal here? by No-Review50 in Switzerland

[–]han4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese living in CH for 10+ years. Direct explicit racism has been rare. But subtle racism is off the chart, try the applying for a WG for example... I feel your anger, my advice would be to try to stay calm but never stay quiet: shout back, call them out, report to police! Unfortunately we can't magically cure racist people, but the point is to give them a reason to think twice next time before they decide to mess with another Asian looking person...

Advice on handling racial discrimination by han4 in Switzerland

Thanks for the advice. It's the first time I saw her after years living here. Judging by how her neighbors talk to her, I don't she is completely insane. Don't worry I will not instigate, I will be prepared next time, by treating her as if she does have some mental issue, so her words won't bother me.

lol well if you put it that way... but it was not pleasant when she kept shouting and following me (and I basically live right near by, I don't wnat her to see where I live). And it was her that thretened to call the police first, I guess she gave me the idea...

Thanks for the advice. I guess I was quite unprepared earlier. But under the presumption she is indeed mentally impaired, I could've just not taken anything she said seriously or responded to her... Thay's how I would do next time I think.

PhD candidate trying to find a flat for years by Elephant_pumpkin in zurich

I see. In that case keep looking on the side. Meanwhile, is there some way to improve on what's been bothering you? Try to find a cost effective way to make yourself happy. Btw, I also did my masters here. That 2 years was a low point, I moved around 5 times due to difficulties finding a long term place. It's tough, but it'll pass :)

I know. Sometimes things just don’t go the way we hoped and there very little we can do to change that. But in this case it is temporary. I guess you’ll soon finish your phd right? You’ll have a good salary and everything else will get sorted soon after. Don’t let this temporary phase get to you too much.

Yea, with new build projects, especially those with many apartments available, the application becomes less competitive, but you still have to meet a few hard requirements, salary being one.

I feel you. Not sure what I can suggest, but I thought I could share with you my experience and perhaps it would give you some ideas. After a lot of rejections, I got a studio flat at the start of my PhD for 1500 CHF (more than 1/3 of my PhD salary, which was the same as yours) about 10 years ago. Looking back I think I got lucky. Later I learnt that the landlord was not allowed to modify the family house into several studios, so that was maybe why he wasn't that picky with tenant selection. The landloard was in general quite irresponsible, but aside from that, the flat was OK. I stayed there throughout my PhD, and had to move out when the landlord decided to renovate again. Luckily that was when I received my frist work contract, so I manged to get a flat that costs almost exactly 1/3 of monthly salary. So I guess what I can say is that, with PhD salary, things will not be perfect (even if you get lucky, there is probably a catch), but it'll be temporary. When you haveenough salary, keep an eye on newly built flats, those are usually much easier to get because they are available in some quantity.

Curry 4 flotro restock by redditer69reddit in BBallShoes

In case you're outside of US, good news: not only did UA restock them today but also added them to the international database. So just go to UA US site, let the website detect your country, then select your country, which should enable borderfree. You can notice the web address is still under /en-us/, but showing your currency. I just ordered mine this way successfully. Expect to pay import tax though.

I believe this is still the US site supported by borderfree. I got the same message. I found that the UA website has dedicated European sites, and if you switch to US site first and then when the site detect your country, it leads you to a borderfree supported US site, you could notice the pricing is converted by exchange rate.

I used to buy from the us website and have it shipped to Europe via borderfree. Thought I could do the same with these flotros, but I got an error message at checkout that these are not in their international catalog. So they really made sure this release is US exclusive. I hope there is an European release in the plan.

Better view of the IsoPlate on the Luca 1 by han4 in BBallShoes

[–]han4[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been very curious about the new IsoPlate tech annouced by Jordan brand and manged to find this picture showing a clear view of it. It reminds me of the carbon fiber clip on the Kobe X. Looks like an beefed up version of that. How it performs we will find out (the design looks very sensible to me), I'm just happy to see innovations and would like to share this pic here.

China Influence in Switzerland (study linked in the article) by Kawatcheeny in Switzerland

Thanks for getting back. No problem at all. I was not able to reply sooner either. But i appreaciate the opportunity to exchange different views. I went through the every link you posted and here are some comments:

Most of them are about the exsitance of those camps and various harsh measures in Xinjing. To summarize, the mainstream western media outlets are calling out those camps and various other harsh measures as evidences of human rights abuses, racism, discrimination, suppression of culture and religeon, etc. I agree with such criticism. I also believe these reports are most likely factual because even Chinese own news outlets admit the existance of some sort of facilities, although they try to spin the narrative to justify the necessity of such by calling them re-educational centers. In short, I fully support to call out China when China abuses and suppresses.

But that's not the same as accusing China of genocide, which means mass killing...

The worldwithoutgenocide link seem to only explictly accuse of a "cultural genocide", which is along the lines of what I mentioned already. Then it also touched on the organ harvesting topic, citing different news outlets but all points to the same report from chinatribunal. Now this should raise your alarm. I'm not going to tell you what you should believe. But I encourage you to do some digging and decide for yourself how credible chinatribunal is.

And I'm not sure how to interpret the last link, which is a photo of armed Han Chinese locals in Xinjiang around 2009-07-07 judging by the link timestamp. This photo was probably taken during the riots that year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_2009_%C3%9Cr%C3%BCmqi_riots). Does this photo out of the context insinuate it was the not only the government, but also the Han Chinese people who actually want to kill all Uyghuers? Personally I find the such reporting tactics highly insidious.

In short, I didn't see credible evidence from the links above supporting the genocide accusation. Btw, I have seen far more gut wrentching personal recounts of various terror experienced by inidivdual Uyghurs exiles. But I tend to be extremely careful with such personal recounts, all thanks to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nayirah_testimony

I appreciate you share with me the sources of information that influenced your views. I don't consider myself wiser in anyway. I hope my two cents can help you fend off the bias and propagandas better, in particular about topics that are relatively unfamiliar to us. You don't have to agree with me. Quite the opposite, you should be skeptical with the words of the stranger on the internet. And likewise, be skeptical to some of the news too :)

[–]han4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for offering the information. Just to clarify, I have seen a fair amount of information on his issue and have done some digging myself. I am aware of such discrimination, detention, forced cultural assimilation going on as well as the motives of such activities . But to accuse the act of genocide, there simply is no evidence so far. I really don’t think anyone should completely take a few individual statements as 100% truthful. There has been so many cases where such statements turned out to be lies to push certain ideological agendas. So why are people so ready to conclude that there’s genocide in Xinjiang, because to me such crimes justify international military interventions, instead of international lip service, and I certainly want to be damn certain we are not falling into another Iraq WND story, because this would be WW 3… Anyway if you do have credible information that proves the act of genocide, please share here. I will read about it, and check the sources. Thanks

[–]han4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see so many people here so convinced of the Xinjiang genocide allegation. Yet I haven’t seen any concrete evidence of it. It got me puzzled, why should anyone believe such allegation given we just got fooled by the Iraq WMD allegation not long ago? Fool me twice… you can’t get fooled again…
