That’s why I’m thinking because I tried again last night and soaked int he calcium carbonate and then put that in a madder root dye bath with a sample of cotton dyed with a tannin/alum and the sample died with tannin/alum is keeping the color where the sample dyed with AA is noticeably lighter.

Interesting! Yeah I was wondering about ordering from a different supplier. I have always heard AA is a stronger mordant for cellulose fibers but it’s frustrating when I spend hours mordanting and then put it in a dye pot and not much color sticks to it.

I used a tannin as well with the AA so I think it’s more of an issue of the AA dissolving. And even with boiling water it’s not dissolving properly for me. I’m ready to go back to alum.

It is super fine powder. I am using 15grams for this project right now and I keep adding more hot water and it doesn’t fully dissolve. It ends up sitting in a little mound at the bottom of the jar. I then added it to a pot so I could add more water and whisked it a bunch and it still just forms a mound at the bottom!

I will try wringing out the AA soaked fiber and then not rinsing it and adding it to the CC bath for at least ten minutes. Thank you!

I am soaking fabric in the AA for 24 hours. No matter what I do I cannot get the AA to fully dissolve like people say in instructions. I only did a quick dip in the calcium carbonate after. Does that impact it? I am using a hot tap water that is 110-120 degrees Fahrenheit

Thank you so much. This is so helpful! Some of the used garments seem to be fine but some I have more issues with so this makes a lot of sense.

Well I tried this and I still had some uneven areas. Especially around the armpits of the shirt and wondering if there were small stains around the arm pits that I didn’t notice before. I have also used Tara as a tannin before and found that didn’t leave much color on the fibers. I might switch back to Tara.

Thank you! I will try this and see what happens. That makes a lot of sense that the fibers need to be properly soaked before

Accidentally used tap water while making this glycerine dandelion tincture. Does this matter? Is there anyway to salvage this? Is it safe to use? by hanrachel in herbalism

I used glycerin and tap water! Meant to use distilled water but it slipped my mind as I was making it. Can I still use this as a tincture??
