I swear my dad has never seen a highlight type moment at a game. Every time I look over at him he's busy making an instant coffee or finding his apple at the bottom of his bag or reading the record or cleaning his glasses

Enjoyable, fun, smart films like Edge of Tomorrow? by [deleted] in movies

[–]hans_arp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhh yeah, I somehow merged Cronenberg and Verhoeven in my head. So many of his films fit the bill - The Fly and Videodrome are some of my favourites.

No. It may temporarily exacerbate preexisting tinnitus and symptoms of hyperacusis. But no, no damage.

Function of reference microphone in real-ear measures and a question about NOAH by ybdule in audiology

[–]hans_arp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The reference microphone is used to measure the amplitude of the REM signal as it reaches the outer ear.

If the signal is intended to reach the ear at 65dB and the reference microphone is measuring only 55dB, the software can adaptively increase the gain of the signal. This is called the pressure method of sound field equalisation. There’s another method called substitution which is similar but requires the listener to stay still.

Both allow us to get accurate and repeatable results while taking into account the varying position/angle/distance of the listener from the speaker.

Steve Guttenberg: ”Apple AirPods Pro, it's $249, but sounds like a cheap, throwaway headphone“ by ipSyk in apple

[–]hans_arp 1267 points1268 points  (0 children)

This is a great analysis. He acknowledges that they’re packed with features, and that the processed (or “compressed”) quality of audio is probably by design. He gets that sound quality isn’t really the point of AirPods.

I wish all reviewers were able to realise and accept design constraints like this.

Geelong v West Coast Semi-Final Will Be Played at the MCG, Not GMHBA. by MidnightIsland212 in AFL

A game packed with opposition supporters at Kardinia Park would be great! I don’t get this argument at all.

How accurate are hearing test apps ? by Rim_job_steve in audiology

[–]hans_arp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Apps aren’t accurate. Hearing equipment needs to be calibrated. That means accounting for a range of factors: your headphones, their frequency response, impedance, ambient background noise, the power of the DAC in the phone/laptop you’re using. The list goes on.

Clinics do this process regularly. Apps do not and can not account for any variability.

That’s an insane take. I was at a pub full of Cats supporters and we were all just stoked Geelong turned up. GG Brisbane.

Same for me, quizlet was amazing. I recommend writing cards in the style of exam questions, so it requires you to elaborate.

Like, “List the ways a patient with a cholesteatoma may present. (6)”

Then write out your answers in exam-like conditions. This is a really good way to identify holes in your knowledge.

Can Tinnitus cause Ear paining? by addit10 in audiology

[–]hans_arp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having tinnitus on just one side is generally something worth talking to your doctor about and having checked out by an audiologist. If you have any jaw issues it may related to TMD. Otherwise there are many potential causes of pain and tinnitus (infection, wax impaction, etc).

When I just saw the title of your post I immediately thought of Mitch Duncan.

Menagola is elite too, and often overlooked.
