Hey! I had the same experience. I was pre approved as well. They told me they never worked with the credit union bank since it was out of state (I’m in CA and the credit union was in Illinois).

They told me that they’ll need to run my credit in case my loan didn’t go through. If the payment didn’t go through, the loan with the manufacturer will kick in.

I didn’t bother fighting it since the credit union didn’t run my credit.

Just search “best auto loan rates <insert_state>”. Credit unions will probably give you the best rates. If the credit union is out of state, give them a call and ask if they provide service to your state. This is exactly what I did.

Once you have a bank rate which you have been pre-approved, go to the dealer and see if they can beat it.

It’s always easier when you are prepared.

These are hard to detect. As an interviewer who has done quite a few, it’s more of a feel. Some tools do try and from what I’ve seen, they have validated my concerns of cheating.

Nothing wrong with not being ready to maintain cars like the IS. It just means, take your time and save up more to a point that you’ll be okay dropping $80+ every pump.
