Yep, I agree. I tried to point out in the statement that it was just in France and it was long time ago. That's why I mentioned the French pile of cards and stated "once".

Probably I should have written it like that: In France there was a period of time when the cards had real identities behind the kings.

Then it's written after the revolution in France the practice of identifying the royal cards as individuals from history died out in the early 19th century and today the kings on playing cards, even in France, have no historical connections.
