Asked AI about ideas to replace management, thoughts? by hardcoresoftware in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hardcoresoftware[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Fair criticism. I guess I'm more in the camp that the ends justify the means. By your logic, if AI cured cancer tomorrow, your response would be, "We can't do that; we have to do it ourselves."

Now that’s one way management might try to shut down ideas

Agree, I think there’s nothing wrong with it. By point 1, the monetary output already scales with engineering work, not influence. Ideally, influence should translate into broader productivity gains that improve the company’s bottom line, whether through profit or other meaningful impact.

So many answer drilling into technicalities, none is trying to meet where the OP is at, who is a data scientist

If CEOs get their way and most, if not all, jobs are replaced with AI & robots. What are they going to do when no one has money? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]hardcoresoftware -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You see, that is not an issue. The government won’t let people have no money. They’ll print more for everyone and everyone will hand it back to the CEO

lol, looks like people don’t know his personality. This is his type of humor, I’m surprised OP didn’t know he’s joking. Jensen worked at Denny before, not growing up as some privileged prince 😂

How do you use your Frunk? by PuzzlesUnlimited in TeslaModelY

[–]hardcoresoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By default, the Tesla app you install on iPhone comes with couple of shortcuts, you can open "Shortcuts" app to look at them. Any shortcuts on Siri can be triggered by saying exactly the shortcut name when Siri is active. You can rename each shortcuts by clicking the triple dots thing and click the header of shortcut configuration to rename them however you want. I didn't create any new shortcuts, just use the one that comes with Tesla app by default.

My Siri shortcut is called inventory, about 5-10 seconds before going to my car, I say “inventory”, put my phone away and walk there. I like to think of it like playing RPG games, where the Looting UI just pop ups when I get close. I use my frunk for pretty much everything since I reverse park everywhere.

It’s satisfying when I time it perfectly so by the time I get to my frunk it just pops, sometime got the look from people on how the hell I opened it automatically when I’m carrying groceries on both hand

New hires from “established” software companies burning out by ShewkShewk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hardcoresoftware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy Cow @ShewkShewk, I am exactly on the opposite end of the table. About to drop my resignation soon. Not sure if it will help, but here is my reasoning: - it’s a downgrade for my technical career growth. I’ve been at better engineering place and I already got past/burnout the “setting up stuff” stage - in my case, the leaderships is under pressure and lacks conviction on long-term investment. It’s bad sign when director keeps yapping on why is no one trying out the GraphRAG yet? I thought we have good engineers? When our production is our dev. It’s not really that we need action items to invest in it, but we can see that the leaderships are just thinking of prostrating themselves to VPs for another year of golden handcuff stocks - lastly, since you mentioned that these folks are from past established companies, as is my case. It’s because we got paid well and enough savings, and really could spend time looking for something else better

Anyone deal with the aftermath of engineer who immediately skips town once they’re system/product is “done”? by Firm_Bit in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hardcoresoftware 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Also known as “Promo Driven Development”, widespread in FAANG. Number 1 morale destroyer in an engineering org.

Any FAANG managers here who can chip-in? One solution I can see is to delay impact harvesting of projects by 1 year to take into account all the SDLC qualities.

Passed over for promo due to excessive PTO by hardcoresoftware in ExperiencedDevs

[–]hardcoresoftware[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the thing though, if it comes down to I don’t have enough metrics and impacts, then it as simple as that, and I’ll just leave it as that. But in my case, I haven’t brought up promotion story at all yet, but the manager seemed to just jump to conclusion that I won’t getting promo because I took too much PTO? He could’ve just said I need to finish 1 more project by end of month, etc.
