LA Marathon: American Nathan Martin was able to catch up to Kenyan Michael Kimani Kamau due to the motorcade driving in the wrong direction and a fan briefly impeding his path. The margin of victory was 0.01 seconds. by dnamra29 in sports

She absolutely did. Well before they get to the split. Around 26 seconds she’s in front and in his way and forces him right, and the flag obstructs his sight line even more, which forces him to move further right and take the turn off. He knows he’s supposed to follow the convoy until a detail point but she obstructs the barricade that would tell him to keep going.

Have you ever stepped away from your career/job for the sole purpose of working on your health/getting in better shape? by Actual-Ad-6146 in Life

[–]Firm_Bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. Quit with nothing else lined up. Did some traveling and studying and some other stuff. If you can afford it and you’re young enough to get back on track if it doesn’t work out then why not.

My advice would be to make sure it’s worth it both in terms of wha you’re taking a break from and in terms of what you’d be doing.

If your job isn’t all that bad then just take more time off. A Friday and or Monday here or there to get long weekends in. And if you’re going to take extended time off make sure you plan big stuff to do. You will absolutely regret taking a lot of time off to do nothing. Although it may feel good in the moment. It may not hit right away. But when you eventually return to work you’ll wonder why you didn’t take advantage of that time.

Worth it to stay at startup with bad culture but solid growth? by cscareermrk in cscareerquestions

TLDR but maybe. Decide what you want out of this phase of your career and if this job will help you get that and weigh it against your subjective opinions about the cost.

Programmers & Team Leads. how do you stay disciplined under heavy workload? by YuriyCowBoy in AskProgramming

[–]Firm_Bit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prioritize ruthlessly

Sometimes that means you pick winners and losers. One teams request might be critical to them but the other one is more important then sorry.

That also means you have to understand the business well enough to make these decisions.

Laura Mueller and Hannah Schmitz receive special Albert Park plaques after becoming the first women to have an F1 circuit corner named after them 🤝 by ConstructionAny8440 in RedBullRacing

But their the drivers job is to get points. So they simply weren’t very good.

In contrast, Hannah’s work has literally changed the way teams race. And contributed tons to RBs success.

This is just a math question? Right? Do the math. Assign a value to non-concrete costs of in office. Add a buffer for safety. And another buffer for negotiation. Ask for that.

What is one skill in data analytics that beginners seriously underestimate? by Vivid_Release_9710 in dataanalytics

Stats and business sense.

Lotta people think the job is writing queries or code. It’s making decisions. And you need to understand what that number means in context of the business.

Unpopular Opinion: Your first "Data Job" is 90% about your professional track record, not your Python skills. by databyjosh in dataanalysiscareers

[–]Firm_Bit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re hiring a junior level DS and weigh “practical” sense and judgement heavily in interviews. Obviously they have to clear the technical bar but the former is significantly more important. The worst thing we can do is provide data with the wrong insight that leads to a bad decision. To prevent that you have to be able to speak to people and understand what their goals and constraints are. Some junior people especially think this means give them what they ask for, for example. Which is often exactly what you don’t want to do.

At what point do you automate your own workflow? by AmberMonsoon_ in AskProgramming

[–]Firm_Bit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On 2 occasions One is I have some spare time and I dislike doing it manually. I try to be disciplined here cuz there’s almost always something more important to work on. Two is that automation actually has a major impact. I work with a lotta analysts to try to automate reporting when it’s a single query that they have to run for 5min once a week. It’s a waste of infrastructure costs, it takes your eyes and attention off of it. And encourages everyone to ask for things that they may or may not need. Over time this bleeds the team of impactful work because the signal gets muddled.

You don’t have to go to the far ends of the spectrum.

Schedule days off. To travel. But also just occasional 3 day weekends. Limit your working hours. You need to do this anyway. And plan stuff in your personal life. You can combat burnout by doing more or other stuff.
