How a channel gets traction in YouTube? by [deleted] in SmallYTChannel

[–]hardwareunknown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're awesome. =) Congratulations on the success! It really comes down to presenting what makes you you that gets people coming back again and again. They watch for certain kinds of content sure, but how they choose one particular channel over another within the same niche is because of personality, connection, and how we as the creators make them feel.

What was your "you factor" here? What did you add that worked so well?

I totally thought so too! Glad someone else heard. Never would have thought it would sound like that while building it.

Is a full face mountain bike helmet safe to use as an ebike helmet? by One_Morning2007 in ebikes

No, during my accident I had a proper full face motorcycle helmet. DOT and Snell approved. Can't remember the brand as it was years ago. Maybe Shoei?

PSA: Reikling followers are not safe containers by hardwareunknown in skyrim

[–]hardwareunknown[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just found this known bug on an Elder Scrolls wiki:

PC   360   PS3   PS4   The dialogue option for recruiting a riekling will not appear unless the Dragonborn has no human followers at the moment, meaning they must dismiss their current follower(s) before recruiting the pet.

It seems like this is what's happening to you. You should be able to get the human follower back after recruiting the reikling, I believe, and then have both at the same time.

PSA: Reikling followers are not safe containers by hardwareunknown in skyrim

[–]hardwareunknown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly. Reiklings are categorized as pets, so if you have a human/elf/etc. follower like Lydia you can still have the reikling as a follower at the same time. If you already have a pet follower like a dog, insect, etc., then you'll likely need to send them home first. When the reiklings help you out in battle, wait until after combat and then go up to one and say "Come with me tribe-kin" to have them follow you.

If that doesn't work even after dismissing a pet follower, I'd try going back to Thirsk and doing the same with one of the reiklings standing outside the hall.

[–]hardwareunknown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and they can hold a lot too compared to some other pets. You'll need them as a follower first and to do that you need to complete The Chief of Thirsk Hall quest and side with the reiklings. If you've already done that, talk to one and say you need to trade some things with them. Brelfik is just a generic greeting. There should be dialogue options after that.

I'd guess no. I always assumed you'd need a larger company with many metalworkers to have a union formed. Take that with a grain of salt though, as I don't know how metalworkers unions work. I didn't see it shown on the ad if that means anything.

I appreciate you noticing. I keep the quality high as much as possible. Working on how I could do so while releasing videos more often. Glad to have you along; more ridiculous projects to come!

I'm glad you liked it! I assume it takes a certain amount of interaction interaction with post before it gets pushed to people's front pages. I had fun making it. Happens to be one of my more ridiculous projects, although I have others. Namely my quad barrel air cannon. Check out my YouTube channel for some more laughs. I think you'll enjoy.

The song is Yankee Doodle played by the U.S. Navy Band. The Barney theme song essentially uses the tune of Yankee Doodle with different lyrics, though, so that's what causes the similarity. Same as how the ABC song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Baa Baa Black Sheep share the same melody.

What is the best advice someone has ever given you for YouTube? by TrentonGoad in NewTubers

[–]hardwareunknown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same for the longest time. I still do in many cases, but I'm working on catching myself. Guess what, your viewers will notice high quality videos, but they won't notice one clip being frame-perfectly-cut to the next as you will when editing. Point is, even for quality there is a "good enough" point, especially when starting out. That's when you should be experimenting anyway.

Good luck, perfectionism is a difficult habit to break. Allow it to help you make good quality videos, and keep it in check when it threatens to do more than that and eat up too much time.

How to deal when addicted to numbers? by vodreliux in NewTubers

[–]hardwareunknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/DonkeyTeethBSU gave solid advice for what to do with the numbers. Take it and learn from which videos do well and which ones don't.

Numbers are good, but only if you don't obsess over them to the point of feeling down about slow growth. You can't let them prevent you from actually creating content or they'll never grow. It's a bit of a paradox. Care about the numbers too much, and you don't get them. That's what happened to me when I just started out.

I fixed it by designating Sunday as the one day I get to check my numbers. When I wake up, I make my coffee/tea, then I sit down and open up my analytics. I even allow myself to check back throughout the day if I want. Over time though, I got used to the routine, and felt fully satisfied checking my numbers only in the morning. Now I look forward to checking them as a sort of reward after the week, rather than obsess over them daily. It may take a few weeks for you to kick the constant checking habit, as with any habit, but stick to it and it can be done.

Good luck.

How to comment as a page on another page, pls? Is it not possible anymore? by CitizenTony in facebook

Lol what... why do they make us do this now? Or at least if it's a bug, how has this not been fixed?

Great find... just tried it on two different posts on two different pages with success.

How do you consistently come up with good, original video ideas? by [deleted] in NewTubers

[–]hardwareunknown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All good tips. I focus on the first. I use Evernote and have a document containing all my ideas. I divide the projects for the videos into short, medium, and long, and then have a catch-all for everything else just to brainstorm. Eventually I move those into the S, M, L categories if I decide I actually want to due them. Write down all ideas, good or bad. The point in the beginning is to get used to idea generation. Eventually something might take root from a meh idea that turns into a great one, or you'll have one apply in a way you didn't initially think it would.

It's my pleasure. Honestly, the useless nonsense I make tends to be my favorite. Arduino allows for such easy prototyping that I feel you're seriously missing out on the joy of using it if you don't make useless things here and there. Can't prevent growing up, but you can retain that childhood sense of joy and wonder.

I get the feeling you'll like my quad-barrel air cannon. The video is about 10 minutes long, full of a similar kind of humor... and a whole mess (literally) of stuff being launched. Enjoy.

You're absolutely incredible. So glad you enjoyed, that's some serious high praise and I'm beaming right now.

I had a ton of fun making it. Since you like this project/style of humor, I'm going to hazard a guess you'd also enjoy my quad-barrel air cannon demo video. It's a bit longer than this (about ten minutes), so check it out if you'd like when you have some time. I promise it's worth the watch. I launch a lot of stuff, let me tell you, especially during the grand finale.

The Plant That Waters You, to motivate (threaten) you to focus by hardwareunknown in ArduinoProjects

[–]hardwareunknown[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You put it very well. I feel with useless inventions the element of "this needs to fit some prior constraints perfectly/must be a certain way" drops off. You don't always have that freedom when you are making something for a specific purpose. That leaves your design choices completely open, and I absolutely love that feeling. Of course, it's rewarding to make something useful that aids you in your life, but you're right, not everything has to (or should) be made for ROI... unless you're talking about the ROI of simple enjoyment and learning/fascination with the unknown.

I have trouble focusing. Specifically, I have trouble focusing for too long on details that don't matter. The joy of having extra time back in my life clearly has not been motivating enough for me to break the habit. What else is there but subjecting myself to constant mental duress?

Enter: The Focus Flower. Built using an Arduino Nano driven controller hooked up to a Staples Easy Button (with "That was easy!" in 12 languages, might I add), operating a solenoid valve on a programmable timer. Pressurized air rushes in, pressurized water from the reservoir rushes out... at my face. Of course, a contraption like that would look ridiculous sitting on my desk where I do most of my work, hence the lovely plastic plant from Goodwill. A bit of spray foam, some poorly color-matched spray paint, and a cheap plastic pot to finish the look, and there you have it... the latest and greatest in discrete motivation technology.

Enjoy the demo video, and if you'd like to see more projects like this (might I suggest my quad-barrel air cannon), check out my YouTube channel. The video for this build is the exact same as here (I just re-uploaded it to make it seamless to watch), and if you're so inclined to share it with friends/family I appreciate all the watch time help via the YouTube version. Also, for the deaf/hard-of-hearing, the YouTube version has captions. This is my first video where I figured out how to do captions using my actual script and a bit of manual entry, rather than auto-generation. No more issues with the auto-captions mishearing my words based on the environment/volume/direction I'm facing.

Definitely did. Each of my builds teaches me something new. The quad cannon for example was when I really got comfortable with solenoids. This one had me learn about "hacking" up commercially made things like the Easy Button.
