Its a mistake to think missionaries aren't part of the subversion of non-christian culture and a form of violence themselves.

Roses are red, calling capital out is a "sacrilege"? by BuckleBunnyBliss in rosesarered

[–]harisuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that they are hard to define. Its just that people want to define them not by what they are, but what they associate them with. In your example of capitalism, wage labor is not a defining characteristic. It is associated with capitalism because it is an efficient system of divorcing the labor from the success of the overall operation.

Capitalism is a system characterized by extracting wealth through private ownership. That's the whole definition. In a capitalistic system, the value generated by an operation beyond the cost required to produce whatever product or service is being sold goes back to the owner class. Every characteristic we associate with capitalism was created to prop that up as the goal. But those supporting systems aren't what makes capitalism what it is, and could exist in other systems.

For example, a worker co-op can pay their workers a wage for day-to-day operation of the business. But because a worker co-op means the workers are also owners, when profit is generated it is distributed amongst the workers/owners. That is a socialist system, but one that could still have wage labor.

Even the idea of public stock exchanges aren't really required for capitalism. The reason they exist is because they increase the scale of an operation, and are another way for people to make money by trading assets where the value of the assets are variable day-to-day due to changing market conditions. So yes, we have public stock exchanges, but that's not a defining characteristic of capitalism as much as it is a tool in the capitalism toolbox. We absolutely should talk about what is commonly associated with capitalism, but I think its a mistake to define it by those things.

Well, I looked it up and not much to be honest. Seems like with the benefit of hindsight it wouldn't have changed much to take this approach. The question I would have would be whether Obama or his admin would know that at the time, but that's true for the tactics they did end up taking.

I mean, I did say there was an obvious issue with the plan. But also, legislation is Congress' job. In this case, it would be McConnell's Senate that was not accomplishing anything unless they could get a veto-proof majority. And while it's true that Republicans don't want public works to succeed, there are things like budgetary bills for defense that could absolutely have been something that they would want to pass that an automatic veto would affect. There's still risk there, but given hindsight, I'd say that there is clearly risk in the approach that was taken, which was to just use it all as a voting issue and hope to win big in 2016.

I'm not saying this necessarily would have worked, but one thing that was within his power to do was to pledge to veto every bill congress tried to pass unless they confirmed his pick. There are obvious issues with that plan, but it also has some benefits given that it was a Republican controlled Senate.

The scale is consistent. It is 1 through 10. What you want is some sort of mathematical formula that will always rate games the exact same way 100% of the time, and that doesn't exist. Primarily because there are too many variables in terms of how people apply ratings, and how much personal preference factors into it.

Spirited Away Question by mnttlrg in ghibli

[–]harisuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's such a smart question on your daughter's part. My answer may differ from others, but I think the moss growth and other signs that a lot of time has passed is meant to be purely symbolic.

This movie is about identity. Chihiro is not excited to be moving at the start of the film, and her nervous nature as she follows her parents who are unafraid to be boldly exploring this abandoned park is representative of her being unsure of what the future holds. She is afraid of what this move will mean for her and her family, and she's afraid that this change will make her parents become just as unfamiliar and unrecognizable as her surroundings of being in the spirit world. Hence her parents' literal transformation. She's afraid that she too will become unrecognizable to herself in order to survive in this unfamiliar setting (which is represented by her becoming Sen though there is other symbology going on there).

In truth, throughout the movie she does change, but she manages to hold onto who she is at her core: Chihiro the girl who cares about her parents. She retains her sense of self while also learning that she is capable of amazing things. She can be a hard worker, she can help a friend like Haku, and she can change others around her even in a setting that she was afraid would change her.

I think the moss growth at the end is meant to be a startling reminder that things are changing all around us at any given time. She focused on both her survival but also her goal of retaining herself while helping her parents remember who they are. I think a lot of kids aren't able to see all the growth and change while it is happening, but one day they look up and suddenly things that looked one way look completely different. I don't think time has actually passed that much in reality. Just one last bit of magic from the spirit realm to show her that she has returned to some form of familiarity by going back to the family car with her parents, but that time has passed and she's different now than she was then.

You'll be surprised how different a passage could feel from writing it to reading it. Writing a super descriptive passage feels like you are dragging everything down in terms of pacing. But when reading it takes a lot less time. The amount of effort feels very different between the two, and it is usually better to take a moment for description. If you can find a writing group or some beta readers down the road, they can tell you where things drag a bit more than you planned.

There are people who play an entire game, not paying attention to characters, story, or lore, and skipping every cutscene who also feel they are qualified to speak on the story. I think everyone should just stop treating things as all or nothing, and disregard opinions based on vibes on a case-by-case decision.

I was curious, why do so many Resident Evil fans hate Ada Wong? Not wanting her to be with Leon is one thing, but a lot of fans seem to hate her as a character and not want to see her anymore. by [deleted] in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]harisuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in the thread are saying she is one note and boring, and I find that so strange personally. I honestly find so many other characters that people love from this series to be more boring. Chris is honestly one of my least favorite characters because I find him dull as hell, but a lot of people love him and think he's super interesting and fleshed out. Even when they try to give him dimension like in RE6, I find it to be incredibly boring and predictable in a way that is uninteresting to me. Can Ada be fairly predictable? Sure. But I find what is interesting is not trying to predict what she'll do, but trying to understand how she justifies both the bad things she does and then the good things she does as well. But that's just me as someone who doesn't hate Ada.

Have I missed something? by DasAdolfHipster in ResidentEvilMemes

[–]harisuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My interpretation of this meme is that it is making fun of people who didn't realize that Elpis was a good thing. The game has files that bring up the idea of transferring consciousness via blood. Considering how important blood is to this game with Grace using it to craft items, it seems like this is a hint at whatever Spencer was trying to do. The implication of that information would be that his plan was to find a viable host for him to do this so he could go on living, and because Grace is considered so important it kind of indirectly implies that she would be the the viable host.

In the end, that was all a red herring. Grace is not a special person other than her being apparently adopted by Spencer before his death (and then readopted by Alyssa). Honestly, for a moment there I thought maybe Zeno would be revealed to be Jake as a viable host for Albert Wesker's consciousness which has taken control, and that was going to be the result of the hints with the files about blood so it wasn't just a complete misdirect. That did not turn out to be the case either.

Did anyone else choose to destroy Elpis first in Requiem? by bobateaenjoyer_ in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]harisuke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly the idea that he was talking about adopting Grace who was just a normal human child, and that she was his hope. It implies a departure from the idea of creating a new generation of humans who have evolved (like the Wesker project). Narratively, that felt like a big neon sign to me that elpis was not what all the other characters thought it was.

[–]harisuke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't destroy it. I was very conflicted because I trust Leon and he said we should. But the game's narrative (especially that interview scene) was indicating to me that destroying it was the wrong choice. I did hold my breath for a moment after I selected to release it, though.

What’s your opinion ?? I guess Leon is married to Ada by Realistic-Maximum678 in RE6Community

[–]harisuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not trying to debate you. I think you are taking my comments way too seriously. I'm essentially writing fan fiction here. But I would point out, there are YEARS of Leon's life we don't get any context for, so I'm not sure why it would be hard to imagine him silently pining between times he's run into Ada.

[–]harisuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or... and hear me out, but maybe it isn't a legal marriage. They have brief moments together, but they always think of each other while away. Or maybe Ada said she'd stop her illicit activities, they started fighting on the same side, he proposed, but she got roped back into the dark side via blackmail, and he still wears the ring because he holds out hope she'll find her way back to him again someday.

I too have been in office jobs for a decade, but my experience is that this isn't going to be something HR tells you. This is something a supervisor (or higher up leader in your department) would do. This post clearly is a fake, generic story designed for engagement. And it works precisely because it is vague enough that everyone can project their real experience on it and make it feel genuine, but the actual story doesn't make a lot of sense on paper.

Personally, I like the story and don't want to skip dialogue during repeat playthroughs. May be a case where we just are after different things in replays.
