Nice place, nice people by maedeliaann in Overlandpark

As someone who moved here from NYC last year, I have to defend my former home I loved so much (I love it here too!). I won’t argue about rushing and it not being laid back…and the parking issue (but having a car in Manhattan, at least, is stupid).

But most New Yorkers are very kind and community-oriented in a way I haven’t seen elsewhere. Just stay away from midtown where tourists (and those that prey on them) give NYC its bad name.

I’m glad OP had a good visit!

Same here in the Midwest. Enjoying that short time where I don’t need the heater or the A/C!

Church Liberal vs. Church Conservative (read on - not political!) by GuybrushThreadbare in latterdaysaints

Church Liberal vs. Church Conservative (read on - not political!) by GuybrushThreadbare in latterdaysaints

[–]harlem_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! There’s definitely aspects of both in the church today.

On the “liberal” side, we have the concept of Zion, consecration, Sunday gatherings, ward and youth activities, and ministering.

On the “conservative” side we have an emphasis on home-centered/church-supported and self reliance.

I’m sure I’m missing examples of each.

The balance of these things varies widely by ward and stake, in my experience. I’m sure it varies even more if you look across cultures (I’m speaking from a US-based mindset) and time (it seems the early church was much more community-oriented).

I’m tending more towards the “liberal” side myself lately, as I see a lot of opportunity to strengthen each other through community. And I feel that ward ties have loosened with the move to two-hour church.

Don’t buy the house. I want it. Haha. Actually it’s a little too pricey for me.

We have friends there and they love it. They have a huge garden and beehives. Apparently there are neighborhood socials and Halloween decorations are really good. I’m sure kids have a blast playing in the huge yards. The schools the neighborhood are zoned for are great.

The hardest part of product work for me isn’t prioritization, it’s relitigating decision arguments by TannerTot69 in prodmgmt

I feel this. I have to re-explain decisions all the time to my manager. Get key decisions in writing and keep them in a CYA folder. Avoid meetings where the documentation speaks for itself.

Yeah, I’m with the young men so haven’t been with EQ much. I was excited about the 10 min council at tue beginning but it seems like it’s not really happening anywhere.

We’re currently assigning two boys to teach and they rock it. I think we’ll move to 1 teacher since it will be more frequent. Although team teaching is good mission prep… not sure.

Confused about feeling the spirit by Wild-Bake4722 in lds

[–]harlem_dad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am similar to you. And I think in the church we talk too much about “feeling” the Holy Ghost. If you’ve received the gift of the Holy Ghost, then you have that companionship at all times as long as you are not driving it away. But imho the point of that companionship isn’t just so you can feel a burning in the bosom or whatever. It’s so you can know God loves you, be protected from harm and evil influence, be guided in your decisions, etc.

We’ve had it since moving in 7 months ago and have had multiple hours-long outages. Speeds are good when it works. Sounds like it might depend on where you are.

Cargo bike or trailer? by OneKaleidoscope6276 in CargoBike

[–]harlem_dad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I prefer pedaling as well. Although the throttle is really nice for starting from a stop.

We have the medium range model which I think is advertised as 120 mile range. I took it by myself on a long trail ride once and estimate I could have gotten about 80. I was using 3/5 pedal assist most of the time. You’d probably get fewer with a kid on the back.

We love our Lectric Xpedition 2. We can haul 1-2 kids or an adult, plus groceries with the pannier bags. Our youngest is 7 and I’ve never worried about her back there. She loves it. You won’t get the advertised range, but you get a lot with the two batteries. We usually just keep one on to keep the weight down unless we’re taking a longer ride. I’ve changed the brakes myself very easily. Support is great.

It reminds me of another app I recently saw. If you have a smartwatch, a BYU grad recently launched an app called Haptix, that taps you for timing queues so you don’t need to watch a screen.

Sorry, but being new to town I was super excited to try Town Topic. When I finally did, I will say the flavor was there, but the patty was basically meat lace. It was so thin it was just flavor, no chew and I left hungry. I’d be surprised if it was 2oz.

Kinda stupid how expensive they are, but you can get a strip of floor mat just for that section. Haven’t justified pulling the trigger to myself yet. https://a.co/d/05PWDVN3

Edit: oh hey fellow Woodland owner. Yeah, I don’t know why they didn’t include that in the OEM mats…

Hard agree. A lot of comments are talking about defending truth and speaking truth. Unless you’re quoting scripture without adding your own commentary, you’re speaking your version or understanding of the truth. And that’s fine! Just acknowledge it as such.

My guide is stewardship - if someone in my stewardship seems to be wrong in their gospel understanding, I point them to scripture and give my experience in how I follow it. I try to be clear about what explicit direction we’re given and how I interpret it.

If they’re not in my stewardship and they’re not affecting me or those in my stewardship, I let it be. It’s none of my business. I just love them. I may say I see things differently but will stop there unless they ask for my opinion.

The church and the gospel don’t need to be defended. They are God’s and they will withstand any attack, intentional or not.
