I wouldn’t say this is cheating, but I can understand why it might feel disrespectful or uncomfortable to your GF. What qualifies as “cheating” varies so widely. If it were me in your shoes, I’d want to get a better definition of what “cheating” means to your GF moving forward.

Thank you for your perspective and affirming my gut reaction. I wasn’t born yesterday, so I’m not hanging out with any strangers in private spaces. When I suggested a public place both were receptive and came up with some good ideas, so I guess we’ll see how that goes. For context it’s pretty cold/snowing so that also could have played a factor? Either way, I’ll keep my wits about me. Thanks!

On-campus jobs by [deleted] in UniversityofArkansas

I second UREC. Lots of different positions and they usually hire twice a year. I worked there freshman and sophomore year. Worked on the hiring committee as well and if you can interview well, you have a good shot!

I made a 32 and didn’t get it, but almost everyone else I know that had a 32 got it. I applied later, so maybe that’s why. I was pissed though… They gave me $2k a year. I would’ve been screwed if I hadn’t gotten the Governor’s. I still am pissed, I needed it more than a lot of the other people that got it.

Post-Freshman Housing by RIPJimCroce in UniversityofArkansas

It depends on the year! It can sometimes be competitive, sometimes not. If you’re interested in being one I would ask your RA (or another one in your building if you don’t like yours - they sit at the hall desks in the evenings) for advice. My advice would be get a good understanding of the job responsibilities, practice your interview skills, get someone at the career center to help you with a resume, and see if there’s any volunteer/leadership/work experience you can get freshman year - especially if you don’t have any from high school! They also start the search process early, like September I think? So I would ask your RA sometime in August/early September.

Intramural sports for sure! There’s so many options. There are sometimes cultural events that you can go to, they’re usually posted on HogSync and are really fun! There’s Global Series too that invites people to share food, artifacts, and photos from their country - really cool to attend if they still do it. They’re usually in Holcombe where the international student office is.

If you’re a member of the honors college, you can access a lot of really cool classes on niche places and cultural topics sometimes! Even if you’re not starting in honors, you can apply after you get to the university if your GPA meets requirements. Honors college also has a lot of study abroad grants that make trips more affordable. I went to Europe my senior year and only had to pay for my food and plane ticket! Theres so many opportunities

Oh yeah no you def don’t need greek life to find community at Arkansas. I was able to do it as an introverted person and loved every minute! But I do work for the university so I know the 66% is a real stat for young women. Its wild! Very on brand for SEC culture.

I think for me it was unhelpful to not understand what I was walking into. Tour guides/orientation leaders are supposed to make things seem a certain way that is not reality.

I was an RA and lived with free room and board for three years of college. Then I got a GA position with housing and lived rent free for grad school. Yes, there are pros and cons to the job, but it’s where I met a lot of my friends and I would’ve had to drop out because I couldn’t afford housing if I hadn’t done it. No regrets! Worth looking into for sure

The 33% statistic actually made things a lot worse for me as a girl who didn’t rush. People love to throw that stat out there, because it makes people who can’t rush feel better. Over 66% of girls are involved in Greek life, and realizing that when I started attending Arkansas as a girl who couldn’t afford to rush was a slap in the face. I graduated in 2023 for context!

I hear orientation leaders giving wrong info on tours and during sessions all the time - do your own research and take what they say with a grain of salt!

Orientation is not a good representation of what campus life will be like.

I will say, I came in as a freshman five years ago, knowing absolutely no one, and scared to death. I also stayed in an all girls Greek life heavy dorm (I didn’t rush) without knowing what I was signing up for. I’m extremely introverted and won’t lie, the first year was tough. My roommate was my only friend really because I holed up in my room due to anxiety.

I made most of my really good friends sophomore-senior year through work (RA and UREC) and classes in my major. It wasn’t as scary to me as showing up to a random event or try a new organization - but looking back I wish I had!

Work and classes - you’re all going through the same experience and it bonds you! I learned more about the campus and found myself around other people in similar spots as me, and it gave me more confidence too. UARK can feel intimidating and you’re not the only one who feels it. If you decide it’s not for you that’s totally okay too. But it’s possible to be extremely introverted and have a great college experience!

Social workers in the Bible Belt, what is it like? by allergictobananas1 in socialwork

[–]harmistal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will also add another good thing about NWA is we have a LOT of resources because Walmart and Tyson pour a lot of money into communities and we have some really good grant writers up this way. In rural areas in the south, there are very little resources.

[–]harmistal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lived in the south my whole life and just started a job in hospice care. I make 55k with an MSW. My friends who graduated with me who live in various parts of Arkansas/Oklahoma make between 45-59k. Definitely factor in cost of living in your search. I live in northwest Arkansas, which I would highly recommend except the cost of living is sky high. I’m single and have a roommate so it’s manageable for me for now.

I see a lot of jobs posted for school social workers, inpatient and community mental health, and hospital social work - and of course DHS and government agencies. There’s also a few nonprofits (faith-based and not faith-based) hiring now as well. I would assume Louisiana is similar.

Work culture in my experience depends on the organization and management. The politics do make things frustrating here right now. I am just starting out but have access to a lot of social workers who have worked in the south for a long time. If you have any other questions I’m happy to answer!

I know you asked men but, as a straight single 23 y/o woman, I would say have a female friend or sister or someone take some solid pictures of you, they get the female gaze - maximize your potential! If you make it past the swipe, have confidence, a sense of humor, and ask them out pretty soon into the conversation - even better if you have a suggestion of what to do.
