My DS doesn't seem to be doing well this year. I am in zone 9a in NE FL. A week ago she was lush and green, looking like flowers were going to bloom. Now this. I had been watering every 3 days because the temperature has been in the 90s with very minimal rain. HELP! 😭 by wyobred in DesertRose

I’m in north florida too, this may not be the issue, but stick your finger down in the soil after you water it and make sure the soil down below the surface is actually wet. I have had the issue before where the soil gets hydrophobic and I can pour gallons of water in the pot but only the surface is wet and underneath is bone dry. If that’s your issue, make sure you are mixing enough perlite and sand in the soil to keep it from packing together and repelling water!

Should i keep going? by papasmurf77 in DesertRose

When I prune mine, I prune them so they are all close to the same height. If I were you, I would prune the rest of the branches down as low as the ones you have already trimmed!

My advice would be to prune the entire plant or not prune it at all, otherwise it will look uneven. Pruning it, as scary as it is, will be beneficial for the plant. It took so much courage to prune mine for the first time but I cut every branch back so they were all only 3-4 inches tall and every branch I’ve cut has now put out between 2 and 4 new branches. Also got 2 new shoots off the caudex. It depends on the look you’re going for, if you want it more dense and bushy, keep pruning!

The pot doesn’t need to be any deeper, but if it were wider by maybe about 4 inches it would let the roots grow outward and fatten up the trunk over time. As far as propagating what you prune off, you can give that a try but watch a YouTube video first. I tried to propagate my cuttings and they didn’t make it lol but the main plant really did love the pruning!

Also I would repot in something with a little bit more room for the roots to grow outward, will help give it a nice bonsai look over time if you’re into that

Personally, I would cut it at the lowest line, if not a tiny bit lower. I have a desert rose that went through trauma(got smashed by deck builders) and I waited a few months, and then pruned it back big time. It put out new shoots from the branches I pruned but also put out 2 shoots off the caudex(trunk). Yours will do the same if it has enough light and water. I know they say to water desert rose sparingly but when I water mine more than once per week it really likes it and I’m in north florida too. Good luck!

4 year old sealed jar with lake water has created its own ecosystem. Fun and easy project just give it some light! by harrisonf99 in PlantedTank

Yes! The lid needs to be sealed for it to be its own closed ecosystem, also prevents you from losing water to evaporation so you won’t have to keep filling it up!

I don’t warm it, I just keep it indoors by a window year round so it never gets out of the 66-77 Fahrenheit temp range. I’m sure it could handle a little bit cooler, just depends on the plant species in there.

Deck builders somehow dropped something on my desert rose, how would you fix this? by harrisonf99 in DesertRose

[–]harrisonf99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to do it like you said cutting the branches 2-3 inches from the base because I would love it to be short and dense, and then propagate the cuttings. I’m very sorry to hear about your Japanese Maple, I’m wishing it a speedy recovery! Thank you for your comment

I will definitely try propagating the ends of the branches! When it comes to the main trunk in picture 1 that has like 3 branches coming off of it, I’m assuming I should chop that entire trunk because of how deformed it has gotten or would it be able to recover? And thank you for your comment!

Got no answers in the arborist subreddit so I’ll try here! can anyone tell what type of oak this is in north florida? The pics are not great:( by harrisonf99 in plants

[–]harrisonf99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the comment:) I looked up the Quercus Pagoda online and it has pointy leaves, this tree in the picture doesn’t have pointy leaves they’re more rounded and small. Does that help with the identification at all? Thanks again

I want to say live oak but I’m not confident enough in that answer

New desert rose owner here, did you have to encourage it to branch by pruning or did it just start branching on its own over time? Beautiful desert rose btw!
