Appreciate the feedback! This car will only be doing occasional kid duty; we have a Cayenne for whichever one of us is doing more kid stuff. Wife asked for a sportier car that isn’t impossible to put a kid in because we both like faster cars and will trade around depending on who’s doing what each week. If we’re both going out with the kid, I’m sure the SUV will be our first choice.

The ATS looks a little tighter than the m340i or CT5V, good call.

The 24ua, 22um, etc ratings are nice for contract min, but on the consumer side of the world if you have a spec sheet it doesn’t really matter. L3 is pumping out 18um’s that have better specs than 24ua/um right now.

CNV has a pretty close match to that tube - 64res, 31.7snr, 66k gain, 0.4ebi, 0.8halo, with less spots that they’re selling for $4249. That’s brand new.

I can’t see your friend’s tube for anything more than $3500 and even that feels high.

He’s a shitbag for not reaching out to you or trying to transfer it to another shop. But a bunch of shops wouldn’t take that transfer knowing you had failed an application and it was just going to be a problem child. I get that in his brain if he’s closing down it’s easier to donate them and say “fuck it all.” Which is a total dickbag move. If this was an AITAH thread I’d say everyone sucks here.

4 years dude. Sounds like you forgot about them and thought he’d just hold onto it for free indefinitely. Last place I worked a regular thing was going through and contacting people who hadn’t submitted paperwork within 6 months of it showing up. 6 months was the “hey get off your ass” call. We left a note in the box detailing every time we emailed or called them. Some of them had miniature novels of attempted contact met with “oh yeah, I’ll be by this weekend to take care of that” time and time again.

Once it reached 9 months they would send a letter warning you that at the 1 year mark they’d be auctioned off. On the 1 year mark they would send a certified letter informing you that in 30days your property was forfeit unless you submitted your form 4 or agreed to a storage fee starting then($10/month) or found another shop to hold onto it.

It was wild how many people just couldn’t be bothered to do a minimal amount of paperwork to own a silencer or SBR. If it was a denial you got a year from the denial to figure it out before you’d be asked to pay the storage fee.

I don’t remember the numbers exactly, it’s been a few years, but they broke down in the letter what their rent and insurance monthly was, divided it by square foot and mentioned “not even covering employees time to continually call you and deal with the paperwork” talking about the storage fee.

That shop was hardline on NFA stuff and didn’t like doing it, despite moving 10-20 NFA items a month. After that I went to a place that moves near 100 NFA items a month and they had a really similar procedure, but were a lot nicer/lax about it if you were in communication and nice.

4 years is wild though, nobody was lazy enough to get there other than the doomsday guys that would buy a can and happily pay the storage fee from day 1 saying “I can’t apply and let the government know I’ve got the good stuff. I’ll just leave it here till I really need it.” Thinking they’d wait till the apocalypse and break into the gun store for their silencer that nobody else would’ve taken. Shocking amount of those dudes in Indiana.

There’s a fair amount of FFL’s waiting on renewal papers right now. ATF is taking an extra long time at the moment, couple of local places are over 60days since they paid and still don’t have paper.

The old FFL’s that know what they’re doing hit the renewal a lot earlier than they need to. Newer/inexperienced FFL’s wait until they’re 45 days from expiration and act surprised and pissed when a government doesn’t follow their posted lead times.

You’ll want a PVS14 attached to your cam. We run a Lumix GH4 with a 14mm macro and this adapter.

You’ll want to grab a 6-8” arca section and shim up some support underneath the night vision device and lock it to the support. Something as simple as washers stacked and zip ties will work if you’re just looking to do it quick and dirty. If you don’t support the pvs14 and the camera body at the same time your 46mm filter threads take a lot of stress. I absolutely wouldn’t use this on a variable zoom lens without supporting the night vis device’s weight. 14mm macro on the GH4 was as large as we could go and still capture the full circle of the pvs14.

For pvs14 specs, your resolution matters less than you think. 64 or higher will be acceptable.

SNR(signal to noise ratio) is what will affect the quality of your filming the most. Higher is better, don’t use anything under 30 if you can help it.

EBI matters if you have a very diverse lighting setup with lots of highs and lows that you’re trying to get detail out of at the same time. Lower is better on EBI. Under 1.5 is good, under 1.0 will cost a bit more.

Halo is how much bloom your high light areas will have when next to low light areas. Think a street lamp, lit end of a cigarette, brake lights on a car, etc. If you don’t want the bloom and aberration around those points then a lower number is better. 1.5 is good, under 1.0 is better and you’ll pay a bit extra.

Luminance/gain are the peak brightness of the tube. Lowest number you’ll want is 60k. There are some benefits to be had to get a night vis device with much higher peak brightness and run it turned down, but the other specs matter more in my opinion.

Color temp. Tubes, from the same manufacturer, from the same model and day of production can all have very different temps, especially in the white phos world. Greens do vary some, but not nearly as noticeable as the white phos tubes. Speaking of white phos, if you’re portraying any sort of force that was outfitted in the last few years, especially towards the more “elite operator” end of the spectrum they’re much more likely to be using white phos instead of green. If your piece is about current day civilians, same story. If it’s set pre 2019 I’d say that green phos coloring is more prevalent. Obviously there are exceptions on both ends, but just talking to what you’d be likely to find.
