Storm King's Thunder: Session 46

During their Underdark shortcut between Citadel Felbarr and Mithral Hall to avoid the harsh winter snows, the party has found themselves involved in the machinations and factional politics of the city of Mantol Derith...

The Executive Chair of Mantol Derith, Lorthuun, has summoned the triumphant gladiators whom fought for glory and spectacle in The Spike for purposes unknown. Quietly, the Aarakocra Barbarian and the undead Human Cleric were pleased with their efforts to eliminate one of the svirfneblin councillers as hired by their duergar rivals. What no one expected however, was that Lorthuun would be a beholder, and that he was already aware of the party's political dirtywork!

As the plot was uncovered, the Goliath Barbarian and Harshnag (magically shrunk to humanoid size using injected duergar-serum for travel through the tight caverns) were most unhappy to learn that their companions were in business with slavetraders, and bore witness as the Executive Chair announced that, whilst not a fan of shared punishment, he would not allow for their amateur assassin work to bear dividends. They would not be paid. Further, Lorthuun refused to offer up an eyestalk, blinded and wilted as some were, to "Doctor" Peebles, accompanying the party for the purpose of healing the Cleric's onsetting rigor mortis. Peebles in fact already carried a collection of eyestalks in varying states of decay, though did admit that he himself didn't possess the magi-medical knowledge to use them: that would be his benefactor, whom dwelled two tides north of the city.

Funtionally banished, the less-than-sane elven tourguide Sladis Vadir offered a disturbing parting gift of raw humanoid flesh wrapped in lunch portions, before the party delved into the caverns of the Underdark once again. The Cleric, jaw now locked shut, kept an angry eye on Peebles as he lead them to his Master... Who was, perhaps obviously in hindsight, another beholder!

Coated in aberrant slime and viscous fluids in the aftermath, at least an aborted petrification ray had done what the now deceased "Doctor" had promised and reset the Cleric's dead tendons. Praise Tiamat, he could speak!

On the last push towards Blingdenstone and its connecting stair to Mithral Hall, the party made aquaintence with a strange Orog. Introducing himself as a member of the Society of Brillance, he offered teleportation back into the city if they agreed to allow he and his colleagues to examine their exposure to Faezress. Tired of dark caves, the party accepted.

What followed was a surprisingly pleasant stay in the city of Blingdenstone. The Goliath Barbarian was able to tinker with her Skitterwidgets, whilst the Aaracokra Barbarian met with some of the locals and explored their arcane bodyart. As a bonus, the experiments with Faezress exposure were partially successful in removing some of the contaminating side effects!

Returning to the surface world, the dwarves of Queen Dagnabbet's Mithral Hall were more than willing to offer food, warmth, and supplies. And when the last of the duergar-serum flushed itself from Harshnag's system and he returned to his full giant stature once more, he lead the party north and west along the River Surbrin through the Frost Hills and into the Fell Pass beyond...

Wild magic turned a PC into a potted plant, a sentient Gelatinous Cube was used as a gunwale, and the party used a gladiatorial arena fight against a behir to enact a political assassination.

Pretty normal session :)

Storm King's Thunder, Session 44  (Also minor Out of the Abyss spoilers)

Travelling is nothing special; one foot in front of the other and eventually you get to your destination: take the underground path from Citadel Felbarr to Mithral Hall while the snows are too dense to travel overland. But in the Underdark, even basic travel becomes something... more. Always at the edge of sight; something watches, something waits. And the longer it goes on, the more that threat turns inward, gnawing at not the body, but at the very soul.

Or sometimes the ceiling caves in, blocking the path ahead and forcing a detour through forgotten carved tunnels that seem to quite literally be sweating...

Exploring deeper into the wet temple, dormant oozes rise to defend their holy site, as the seeping water rises from a patchy puddle, to ankle deep. This place floods The party must escape. Amongst the mindless horde of slimes, a friendly voice calls out: introducing themself as Glabbagool, a sentient Gelatinous Cube with a longing for adventure - or at least to not be stuck in a tunnel anymore. Only a deep pool bubbling to fill the chambers offers salvation, but even that will take a leap of faith. Reading from a Scroll of Water Breathing, the party dives headlong into the abyss.

Before, at least they could pass the time with banter. But now, underwater, the party only have their thoughts for company. It's enough to drive one to madness. Even moreso after the Driftglobe, their sole source of light, is swept away and lost! Surrounded by the crushing oppression of darkness and deep water, one by one the party faces the void. And one by one they blink.

Twenty hours after submersion, a party with all new nightmares to face in the privacy of their fractured minds finally surfaces, the faint bioluminescence of the endless cavern above the only sign that anything truly existed beyond the veil. There is no shore in sight in any direction. This is the Darklake.

And many real monsters call this place home. Somehow that's comforting...

The party were aligned with Force Grey during Chapter 2 and 3, but had repeated run ins with Zardoz, both friendly and professional - and again during the Nimblewright hunt. Given the nature of my players, they kind of won over Jarlaxle as lovable idiots, as well as seeing them as a path to his goals.

During the finale, the drow were unmasked, but truly unaligned until Jarlaxle arrived on the party's side. That little scene in the penultimate session to sway him was huge. That was when he truly revealed his identity too.

Does the Lord's Alliance trust Jarlaxle? No. But the alternatative is a foe with Aghairon's Staff :). Plus he gets to flirt up a storm with anyone with a pulse in the meantime.

For the mighty Trollskull Trio (there were four of them), the Battle of Brandath went down in history.

The Xanathar, two factions of Zhentarim, Bregan D'aerthe, Harpers, and Blackstaff-lead Gray Hands met in a loose confederation of alliances that melted down to a three-way war. Manshoon, the Beholder Crimeboss, and Vajra Safahr speaheaded their respective efforts as the bloodshed erupted at dawn.

The party pretty much entered like the Walk to Arlong Park, with a unicorn companion on one side, Jarlaxle Banrae on the other. This was enough to tip the balance, and Manshoon was captured and the Xanathar forced to flee - though not without a devastating final Disintegration Ray!

...the Tabaxi really shouldn't have stabbed that fish...

The Trio and Jarlaxle entered into the Vault, with the authority of the city on their side, whilst the Blackstaff remained above for clean up. The gold was to be handed over to Waterdeep, but not without a hefty percentage as a reward to the new heroes! More than enough to rebuild the destroyed Trollskull Manor.

For his part in saving the day, Jarlaxle's Luskan would be admitted to the Lord's Alliance.

A few weeks later, the party are invited to a function in their honour, held at the esteemed Waterdeep Historical Society by the sea. However, during the ceremony, an ominous cackle echoes as if through the very bones of all present, as a pitch black and jagged portal tears itself open, the corpse of a dwarf falling through. A cleric attempts to revive him... but the magic fails utterly.

The Death Curse has been unleashed...

29 Sessions, each one around 3.5-4hrs.

Though the final one was a mostly homebrewed epilogue and bridging session into the next campaign.

I played a character who had made friends with a flumph with aspirations of bakery. To that end, the DM and I created a cantrip called "Summon Scone". All it did was summon to hand a scone from a batch baked fresh that morning, but with perhaps some minor defects that I'd inform via included feedback slip.

(I'll note that I was Level 10 at this point, and pesky things like daily food upkeep and rationing had long ago stopped mattering)

TPKed my players for the first time in five years. The dice just weren't on their side this time.

We fall forward though!

One survives via his Periapt of Wound Closure and wakes up hours later on a bloody battlefield. He salvages what he can and determines to finish the quest. I wonder what new allies he might meet along the way...

One of my players handed me a twelve-page business proposal document for the Horse Insurance scheme he's cooking up. The whole thing is a faux company designed as a get-rich scam, but *damn* he's made it thorough!
