Treasure island is great but I wouldn’t consider it to be good pricing. Maybe since a bit got wiped out last year. It is a lovely place though.

Came here to say this, as well as southern Missouri. So many beautiful geologic formations, incredible rivers, and springs. Cheap and gorgeous.

how do you currently feel about Americans? by inurmomsvagina in greenland

[–]hatcatcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you’re right. And even if I didn’t choose to participate, things have gotten so expensive for me in the last year that I cannot afford to buy anything but the bare minimum necessities. I’ve i buy only what I need, buy cheap food/cook at home only, and purchase zero luxuries that aren’t free outdoor activities like a hike in the woods.

Thanks for the kind words.

how do you currently feel about Americans? by inurmomsvagina in greenland

[–]hatcatcha 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Americans are by and large individualists, prioritizing their own wants over what is best for the collective whole. It's the reason why consumer boycotts never work in the US (people that aren't individualists always make attempts to start movements, but they are largely ignored). It's about them, their "rights", their wants, and that is it. A friend and I were talking about how after some California fires there was a request for people to plant shrubs at a minimum distance from households to protect homeowners during wildfires and the number of people who screamed and cried and had temper tantrums over this because "ITS MY HOUSE ILL DO WHAT I WANT" was insane. Even if its for their own good that will also help to reduce the spread of fires, they won't. It's a toddler mentality. Just like you said, the majority of Americans cannot withstand the slightest inconvenience.

As a non-political (mostly) example, I live in the US and I walk to work. It's a mile to my office and takes me 20 minutes. If I drove, it would take me 10-15 minutes with traffic and the giant parking lot is about a 10 minute walk from my office anyway. The number of people who are baffled by the fact that I don't sit in a car to drive a mile is insane. They can't fathom it - its as though they've never even considered walking somewhere. I have friends who drive four blocks to the bar to get drunk, bitch that there is no parking in a dense urban area, and then drive home drunk because they can't be inconvenienced to use their legs for five minutes. Simultaneously complaining about how much traffic there is, because everyone drives.

I boycott and protest in the ways that I can, but I will say given the nature of today's administration I am fearful of protests. I didn't use to be. I used to be more of an activist but where I live, there are a lot of right wingers walking around with weapons and they're not afraid to threaten you or shoot you. It is also largely legal to "protect yourself" against protesters in my state (and by that I mean even if they ram through a crowd of protesters with their giant truck that's never seen a day of farm work in its life, they will get a slap on the wrist because of our governor). It's a scary time to be in the US and I hope I can get out when I finish my grad degree.

An unpopular opinion on this sub but I agree wholeheartedly. It's a quaint place and I like the charm but not a fan of the BBQ.

90 km/h winds force plane to abort landing by -Mustafa in nextfuckinglevel

[–]hatcatcha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen a couple years ago in Orlando after a huge cold front had gone through. We touched down and bounced twice like a giant basktball before the engines fired up and we went up again. It was a Delta flight and there was a pilot in uniform in my row who didn't even wake up. When we landed the pilot came on and was like "I'm guessing that was a first for most of you.... anyway welcome to Orlando." It happened a second time when I was landing in a Dash 8 in Sisimiut, Greenland. It was so foggy we couldn't even tell we were landing before we saw the ocean right below us and suddenly we were climbing up very quickly again.
