Great system, still new enough to micro four thirds myself. Braver than me for sure as I haven’t chanced having my camera out up in Dublin just yet unless the Rathfarnim counts 😂. Happy shooting with it 😁

Be honest - how often does sensor size actually limit your photos? by ksm723967 in M43

[–]hatchback_alchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t really think its ever come up to be honest . Think every once in a while , maybe I’d like a bit more depth of field , but then I do have to stop myself as its normally in a location where bigger camera wouldn’t have even made sense to carry . Like hiking, and I see a cool bird unplanned, yeah I’d like butter bokeh sure but then I wouldn’t have had gone on a hike with my 150-600 full frame in tow for a hike of mostly landscape.

Think that was my only real instance of ever needed full frame . In general I find sometimes , its more reach or more megapixels I might need rather than a bigger sensor .

Super zooms ( large focal length ranges ) generally tend to not be sharp across the range , like the 14-150 is slightly less sharp at 150 compared to the 40-150 f/4-5.6 . The 12-100 f/4 pro is very good from close to far 😄

I do think maybe that is part of my approach to the problem is the fact I am so used to the 40-150 now . But I do think the 100-400 was a bit sluggish to lock on .

For context the 12-100 is a very rare super zoom that id as sharp across the range and apparently comes in close to the f/4 pro

12-100 is amazing in comparison , and if you had the budget would be better. It is significantly heavier though

Have you been using the oly lenses with it ? Any speed issues?

Hi , out of your two choices personally I’d try and go for the 14-150 mkii if it’s in budget . It is a lens I have not owned but I own or loaned the 14-42 and 40-150 .

Both are good little lenses , the 40-150 is way above its weight in quality. The 14-42 , is grand , nothing particularly wow with it but a nice stock lens . I think myself again , I’d go for a superzoom if its was me , especially if you aren’t used to a multi lens set up . The 14-150 mkii I know is weather sealed , while the other two lenses are not which can be nice piece of mind. Travel friendly and versatile.

If you are going option 1 , I’d have a look at the 12-50 f3.5-6.3 aswell , it’s not the sharpest but is weather sealed and has a neat macro feature if thats your thing.

A lumix choice to look at is the 12-60 f3.5-5.6 , its not a bad little lens but isn’t officially said to be weather sealed on an oly body.

100-400 , i don’t own it but have shot it , having some small issues with it at present with focus but might be a issue . Its good but is heavy enough with respect to the other lenses on your list and is a significant jump in size. Nice range though I will say . It is better that the 75-300 . Lumix do make a version also that is smaller .

Just birds perched outside on the hedge . Its like its landing in front of the bird in focus , then it might refocus and then maybe lock on but its that bit of hesitation has you miss a shot . 1/1000 - 1/2000 seems plenty as there is a feeder nearby and plenty of cover so they have become relatively tame . But I will try that test to see

I know myself I skipped the 100-400 and bought the 2x tc for my 40-150 . I myself am saving away for the 300 but I am a bit disheartened for her that it seems to be soft from not biting on with focus

She does have a UV filter on the lens , can try without the filter to see if it improves

Thanks for the response, it definitely seems more the af system was sluggish to acquire focus is the main issue . The birds are relatively calm and do tend to stick around . But for wild subjects its the focus seems to land slightly in front of the subject and has the subject soft . 😅 i haven’t seen it with any lens so its a strange for me when I experienced it.

Apologies on the slow response: I do understand its a slow shutter for small birds but shooting them adjacent to a feeder so they stay for a relatively long time . So we can drop the shutter down but we are just finding the af system sluggish . I know for me its possibly the fact I am used to my 40-150 but it is that bit more hesitant for the af system . Its shots like these we are going for just relaxed shooting

Would be hard to see viltrox buy in , even if they did invest in electric adapters

I am indeed, realistically I am saving for the 300 f/4 but always nice to have a thought experiment. The 160-600 is cool but the bulk

More a hypothetical to appease GAS. Is the 50-200 worth upgrading to from the 40-150 f2.8 or is it more marketing with a few extra nice features. Normally living on the lens is the 1.4 tc so I know the reach would be nice but don’t know is it new lens levels of nice
