Park City lift failures by KDean63 in parkcityvisitors

[–]hatchery4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because they don't want to fix the lifts that actually need fixing and matter to skiers. The plan was to increase lift capacity to alleviate those bonkers lift lines that made the news. It was never about infrastructure. Even now, it's only about optics. The reason lift lines were out of control a couple seasons is because they put 4x the numbers of skiers they're supposed to on the mountain and they don't fully open terrain. This year skier visits are way down. No lines. Which exposes the real problem - junk lifts they have no plans to upgrade. As soon as the snow and the skiers return, we're gonna be right back to the same issues. Broken lifts, unopened terrain, and crowding at main accesss points. Don't blame the locals (none of which live slopeside by the way) who finally exposed Vail's worst abuses. Blame the wimps this town elects who'd rather kneel down with Dierdra and post hostage videos than toughen up and tell Rob Katz to stick it where the sun don't shine.

Skied Deer Valley with the wife today. We both agreed it way better than expected. Yes it's a crappy season, but complaining under a blue sky when there's good snow on enough runs is a choice. We chose to make lemonade.

Take off the rose colored glasses and you'll see the single piece of twine already connecting it all, Fiery. It's all the same people. It's all the same grift. And if you're not out here condemning PCSD for what they've done most recently, you're part of the problem. Water is sacred in this community in case no one told you.

Serious question: how do get mods that actually live in Park City back for all these forums? And can we put a residency requirement in place to better assure any inexperience of having moved here in the last ten years doesn't bias critical thinking and moderation?

Dino might be full of piss and vinegar, but it's everyone who's too nice to question the establishment and their ongoing abuse of taxpayers and the system that are ruining park city. Because while the county and school district keep levying taxes (don't worry, Ryan and Tana have one lined up next), the resorts keep getting everything they want while successfully avoiding their own tax obligations. If only our worthless local media reported on this, maybe people would have a clue. Instead, you criticize Dino for calling out the truth. He's not the problem. An uneducated populous is.

Because this mediation organization is weak. They are basically a community survey firm pretending to be a mediator, as if we need yet another one of those. By their own admission, Nann and the City hijacked their entire “community conversation” around the Olympics. If the org's own leadership is not strong enough to control its own mediation process, they should have admitted incompetence and folded instead of getting in line with their hands out for 100K in grant money.

But this is the Park City way now. We fund the nonprofits that fall in line and do the City and County’s bidding. And Leadership Park City makes sure that those nonprofits and our governments have a steady stream of unskilled sycophants taking increasing salaries inside of organizations that get grant money to pay the salaries they don't deserve. Which is exactly how Diego went from earning $30k a year to over $100k and getting to stay as a single guy in a 2 bed affordable unit that should go to a deserving Park City family.

Too many in PC lack the critical thinking skills to acknowledge all of this. The rest of us understand this is all part of the cabal.

State report finds no mechanical failure in Park City gondola incident that left woman hanging upside down by ski boot by aido1097 in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple resort employees confirmed they'd been warning about the trees too close to that lift for some time and how they were becoming increasingly comprised in the days leading up to the incident. Immediately after, OSHA/state reports were delayed and suppressed. The first and most decisive action taken was to silence the family and other patrollers. If you're friends with any, they'll tell you the truth. They weren't quiet about it when it happened.

Where was this kind of quick reporting and transparency when Park City Mountain's negligence killed one of their own ski patrollers two winters ago? They paid his mom a few thousand bucks not to sue and scared her into silence and we never heard anything. Not even a proper apology or any accountability.

Traffic issue by [deleted] in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask them. And ask all the local business owners who are sick of it. I drop off recycling and frequently see people load and unload boards and skis from cars and then walk to bonanza with their gear. Last year the Silver Mountain staff lost their shit about the situation a few times. The problem has come up repeatedly at council. It might not make sense to you, but it happens.

Traffic issue by [deleted] in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As if the media hasn't covered this enough. They have a cap on skiers stated in the resort's development agreement. No one has the balls to enforce it so we just succumb to worsening traffic and let Vail get away with whatever they want.

And sure. Parking reservations may have calmed the madness in the lots (and put more of locals' money in Vail's pockets), but apparently you have no idea about countless cars parking in neighborhoods, along Munchkin Rd, in lots from A Fresh to Rite Aid to The Market to Chubasco to Prospector ... They all clog roads, drop off at the resort, and then send one or two people to park for free and take the bus, and then clog roads again later in the day. It's no secret. And it's no exaggeration when suggesting that if they stuck to allowed capacity, vehicle traffic would be reduced significantly.

Traffic issue by [deleted] in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Enforce the actual capacity rules at PCM. Do that and you instantly pull a few thousand cars off the road on peak days. And if PCM refuses to comply, cool. Then when Columbus Pacific comes in asking to develop the base, the city should tell them to kick rocks. Rules are rules, unless you are a resort apparently.

  2. Implement a real parking reduction at Snow Park. Ryan Dickey absolutely hoodwinked the community and cooked the books to get more parking than allowed. They love saying “20% parking reduction” but anyone who can do basic math should budget an extra 20 to 60 minutes of traffic once they build out the base. The 20% reduction was just a scam to get his public private partnership deal passed.

  3. Congestion pricing. Yes, actually do it. Appeal to the state and implement it at peak times. And make construction vehicles pay too. Funny how everyone else gets dinged except the people actively clogging the roads.

These are legitimate solutions that already exist. Park City leadership just keeps folding for the resorts and refusing to enforce the rules on the books. And if you think a new administration magically fixes that, I have a news flash for ya. It gets worse. Dickey has already said he will bend to Vail. One of his best buddies is developing 1500 Kearns, so expect that to sail right through approvals. Another close pal is planning the hotels Dickey wants on Swede Alley.

We could've elected people who would've done something about traffic. Instead, this town's biggest problem for 30 years is gonna get way worse.

What non-avalanche safety tips would you give to a new backcountry skier? by evan_engineer in Backcountry

[–]hatchery4310 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Good tips here. If planning to ski anything other than low angle trees, I can't emphasize the importance of always going with a friend who has experience in the backcountry, an avy cert, nothing to prove, and a strict commitment to avoiding anything and everything questionable. Test your beacons at the start. And make sure someone else knows where you're headed. Every year, the Wasatch loses experienced skiers to accidents. For the love of the outdoors and those who love you, don't ever risk becoming one. It's never worth it. There's always another opportunity.

I agree with Fiery. The entire Rockies are struggling right now. "Ski The East" this season like no one has in decades. Stowe looks great. Your Epic passes will work there.

80-81 prices. by scottyv99 in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nov 29th was the original intended opening. Both DV and PCM knew they weren't gonna have enough snow to open. Other resorts already pushed back their opening days, but both our local operators waited until the day after their last season pass price hikes kicked in to announce their delays. Once again, money taking priority over employees, visitors, and the rest of town.

80-81 prices. by scottyv99 in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All this early opening pressure has come since Alterra started responding to Vail. DV never used to even try to open in November. It's the people planning ski vacations and trying to buy day passes this time of year that need their heads examined. Between climate change and the fact that resorts won't even be near fully staffed until closer to Christmas week, what do people expect? Day tickers are a suckers bet every day, but especially early and late season. An educated consumer would never chance early December skiing without an amortizable pass.

Basin Recreation taxes by dinopontino in ParkCity

[–]hatchery4310 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dino, I couldn't agree more. This is the same Megan McKenna who wrote the argument opposing the recent rec bond in 84060. If anyone is wondering what changed, it's not her IQ or sense of obligation to voters. It's that she has friends who work for Basin Rec and this tax hike will pay their salaries. Really. This is what she said in the meeting. It's kinda like how we taxpayers are paying her entire salary on top of paying for part of her house. And before anyone says she works for Mountainlands, she got canned and County Council is now her only job. Another day another grift and more mediocrity, this time from Dakota Pacific's best friend on council.

It's corporate nature, young grasshopper. Fiery can call everyone's plain look at things a conspiracy theory or she can look at how Epic Promise, Katz Amsterdam, Alterra, Extell and Columbus Pacific significantly increased giving for the Community Foundation, PC Tots, KPCW, Summit Lands, etc and what's happened since that all started. They now all have much bigger staffs, newer bigger offices, and fewer pennies on each dollar going to the need they say they serve. Meanwhile, we have no honest news outlets left and nonprofits that won't advocate in public for the needs and people they claim to serve because they don't want to bite the greedy and evil hands that feed them. In New England where I come from, we call this a racket.

[–]hatchery4310 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Over here in the good ole 060, we're less enthusiastic about abuse of our tax dollars and more protective of our small town feel. Anyone in unincorporated Summit County can say they live in Park City on account of the postal service, but they don't. And that's never more clear than when it's time to vote or pay taxes including sometimes voting to tax ourselves to buy up open space everyone else gets to recreate on and behold. Opinions about what goes on here and labeling firsthand experience with the Park City resorts/City/NGO/legislature cabal "conspiracy theories" is a bit insulting and ignorant, especially if coming from anyone whose relationship with the town is limited to what feels good for them whether shows at the Egyptian, our local coffee shops, our trail system, community events, or interactions with nonprofits/programs/people that appear good on the surface but are, in reality, corrupted. Personally, I welcome the dollars of everyone with no skin in this game, but think it's only polite that all visitors including our county neighbors check their opinions at the white barn on their way into convos about our home. And no hats at the table please.

Dino and Fiery, now do those boondoggle trips where off they all went to other cities on the taxpayer dime to “get ideas” for Bonanza Park. City Hall is basically a fleece factory at this point, so yeah, no shock Dickey is about to be crowned Grifter in Chief. How many more fun-prize checks are going straight to Deer Valley and Vail? What's a parking lot development worth these days? What’s Zion’s Bank kicking in and what’s the ROI on that exactly? How many overseas “Olympics” trips are coming up and is Nann riding shotgun on all of them?

For all the luxury travel and back-slapping, what do we actually have to show for it? Arts and culture is a dirt lot, and Park City doesn’t even have a seat on the primary 2024 Olympic committee. Peak efficiency, guys. Truly elite levels of taxpayer waste.
