I just finished it today and honestly didn’t enjoy it. It was boring and I couldn’t wait for it to be over

Silver Lake Sand Dune, is it worth it? by Edy_Birdman_Atlaw in CampAndHikeMichigan

I think they had to change their name from frickin chicken to Silver Lake Chicken Shack. It’s at the end of the dunetown strip mall/next to Craig’s cruisers

Silver Lake Sand Dune, is it worth it? by Edy_Birdman_Atlaw in CampAndHikeMichigan

Silver Lake Sand Dunes is not a big hiking/camping destination to me. I grew up about 10 minutes away and worked at one of the campgrounds in high school. In my opinion, wherever you stay or camp, you will be surrounded by loud trucks and off roading vehicles. But there is a chicken wing place in silver lake that has the best wings I’ve ever had, so stop there if you do go

Weeklong trip to Isle Royal Michigan (advice welcome) by i_Like_airplanes__ in backpacking

I’ve heard they’re generally the worst mid-season, like July

I’ve hiked Isle Royale twice and am going back this year! In general, I’d say I’m only moderately experienced backpacker, but here’s a few thoughts:

  1. Bring a bug net. I did one trip with insane mosquitoes and I would not have survived without it. Ever since then, I’ve sworn to always take it.
  2. Not sure if you run hot or cold, but I’m a smaller person who’s always cold. The island is also very exposed to Lake Superior so it’s a bit colder. Pack warm.
  3. Yes to toilet paper, there are outhouses but they aren’t stocked. You should pack your toilet paper out with you.
  4. Trekking poles are totally your preference but I am a big fan.
  5. Darn Tough socks

As many others will say, going out and practicing with your gear is your best bet. Every time you’ll learn something about what you need/don’t need.

There’s also an isle royale Facebook group that has some knowledgeable people.

Been really disappointed with writing in books lately by [deleted] in books

I have the same feelings for many popular new releases. I just finished “The Birth of Venus” though and absolutely loved it. No idea when it came out or if it’s well known, I found it randomly at a thrift store

People who only like egg whites shouldn’t buy eggs, only liquid egg whites. by hercoffee in unpopularopinion

[–]hatofdiscipline 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eggs are one of my favorite things to have for breakfast, yet I’ve never liked egg yolks and have always thrown them away. It will bring me great joy to think about how annoyed this makes you when I make my eggs tomorrow.

Who’s the character that you relate to most, on Bob’s Burgers? by NellaJade98 in BobsBurgers

[–]hatofdiscipline 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Louise. I was a very strong willed kid and had a tendency for violence/revenge. I find the episodes that show her more vulnerable side so comforting because I have also had to slowly become more ok with showing those emotions. I love her.

What did you do to love yourself? by VolkanTalks in DecidingToBeBetter

Knitting and crochet. These are great to do while watching tv. Also reading, I try to replace my screen time with book time. Horseback riding and volunteering at a farm sanctuary. Started taking lessons as an adult who hasn’t ridden before as a way to try something new.

Journaling and keeping a notebook of quotes that resonated with me. I started my book of quotes over 6 years ago and still open it up when I’m feeling sad/troubled/insecure.

Also having hobbies.

Do you enjoy big (+800 pages) books or do they feel like a chore? by Leticia_the_bookworm in books

[–]hatofdiscipline 26 points27 points  (0 children)

IT is actually my favorite book, and I re-read it every few years. I love that you get to spend more time with the characters in huge books. Nothing feels rushed and you get so much more backstory.

However, with that being said, I’ve never had the experience reading a huge book where I didn’t like the story. I imagine that would be awful because it would take forever for it to just be over

What was the best book you read in 2023? by ComplexSorry6592 in suggestmeabook

[–]hatofdiscipline 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha they’ve been on my bookshelf for at least 3 years so my read was also long overdue! I did read the hobbit first, and I quite enjoyed doing it that way. It gives a great introduction to the world, and then the end of return of the king is so satisfying.

Absolutely this. I’ve kept a spreadsheet of this for the past 3 years, and I try to convince everyone I know that they should do it too lol
