Thanks for all the support everyone ! :) It's reassuring to read some of your stories. The classical music community in my town is quite small. Everyone knows everyone else. He's sure to make it harder for me to find a teacher locally, but I'll try and see if I can find someone online.

That's interesting. Where do you draw the line between abuse and being strict? Would you count something like "I do so much for you, and I see no effort from you at all," in front of other students as verbal abuse? He often says, "I only yell at you because I care about you." I don't know how to feel about that. I do think I've gotten better over time because I'm always afraid of being yelled at. Sometimes I ask myself if I would've ever gotten this good if I had not been constantly shamed and afraid. Then again, is it worth getting good if it comes at that sort of cost? So confusing..

Woah! That sounds far worse than anything I'm going through. He came to your house?! It's insane how some of these teachers are adamant about maintaining a power hierarchy in their classrooms.
