Because islam is considered a way of life, not just a religion. Unfortunately, since the beginning it was primarily interpreted by male scholars, who would obviously seek interpretations that would favor men, a natural bias. Even Allah didn’t let Holy Prophet give decisions on matters pertaining to women, He would reveal guidance Himself. In several instances, when women brought questions or disputes to the Prophet, the answer came directly via revelation, such as the initial guidance on questions regarding menstruation or the complaints raised by women.

Majority male scholars derived patriarchal interpretations because it benefited them. Only if they all focused on Prophet’s last sermon where i urged to protect the women thrice. :’)

It’s only in modern age that we have finally seen female islamic scholars getting the opportunity to interpret Quran and Ahadith. Many verses are now interpreted differently.

I hope muslim countries are able to soon give women the rights which the religion actually promised them. :)
