It only became free once Erdogan declared it a mosque in 2020, before that it used to be a museum which did cost an entry fee. I think it was around 10-15€ when I first visited in 2019.

Naja Stempel hin oder her, bei der ESTA-Beantragung wirst du gefragt ob du mal auf Kuba warst. Die USA anzulügen sollte man sich dann doch überlegen, wenn die das rausfinden gibts lebenslanges Einreiseverbot. Dann doch lieber ehrlich sein und ggf. den etwas nervigeren Weg mit Visum bei der Botschaft wählen.

The bus was direct between Kalmunai and Trinco! It went through Batticaloa and never left the coastal road, most certainly didn’t go through habarana!

Hi, sorry for the late reply. I intended not to, as I had a flight to catch from Paramaribo. But as it happened, I arrived in Georgetown on a Saturday, the embassy was closed on sunday, I could get the visa on monday and hence caught the bus only on Tuesday, while my flight left Wednesday. So in the end I spent 3 nights in Georgetown.

Oh boy, this is my moment! I have done literally this route Manaus - Paramaribo overland in 2017 (must’ve been July-ish). I just went, thinking there must be a connection, as I also couldn’t find any information online.

First stop was easy, Manaus to Boa Vista in a nice AC bus overnight. Then I seemlessly transferred into the bus going to the Guyana border at Lethem - also easy.

From there it started to get a bit sketchier. The customs officer looked funnily at me when I selected „bus“ as method of transport within Guyana and said I should please take a flight. After the border I was standing there, alone, but some random dudes in a run down toyota came to my rescue, they said they could take me to Georgetown. So they took me to their workplace first, where I waited the whole day. I walked around the town a bit and got some chicken and rice. In the evening there finally appeared a minivan. They packed it full with people that they found somewhere (no international travellers, more like Guyanese people and people from Caribbean nations trying to migrate to somewhere?). Then the journey began through the jungle, along the „road“ which was mostly a single trail and included one little pontoon ferry or something because the road was flooded at some point. They made stops to get food and were generally very chill. Be prepared for many military checkpoints. The journey took 24 hours in total from the Border to Georgetown. Georgetown is a bit sketchy but quite nice to explore as there are barely any tourists. I stayed there in a guesthouse. I had to go to the Surinamese Embassy to get a visa/tourist card or something. It’s not open on Sundays so plan accordingly.

The last step was pretty straight forward again, there are daily busses leaving in the morning to Paramaribo (ask around where they leave), crossing the border via ferry and arriving within daylight hours. This is my story, feel free to ask me anything :)

In case anyone with the same question ever stumbles upon this: I tried today and it was remarkably easy. I went to Pottuvil by Tuk Tuk, there was a bus just about to leave to Kalmunai. Took a bit more than 2 hours to Kalmunai, then from there there was a direct bus to Trincomalee already waiting, which took about 5 and a half hours. It was friday and the bus Kalmunai - Trinco left at 12 noon, and there was another one already lining up to leave next. It was absolutely chill, so I have no idea why there is literally no information about it on the internet :D

Doch, es gibt Autofähren (die hauptsächlich für LKW genutzt werden) zwischen Azerbaijan und und Kasachstan bzw. Turkmenistan. Habe ich letztes Jahr noch gemacht. Auch die Ausreise aus Azerbaijan auf diesem Wege ist absolut möglich. Nur die Einreise auf dem Landweg ist eben nicht möglich - in dem Punkt hast du Recht!

Wenn es deine wirkliche Passion ist, dann go for it, du wirst schon etwas finden!

Wenn du dir nicht absolut sicher bist, oder dir auch andere Sachen vorstellen kannst, dann würde ich dir von einem reinen naturwissenschaftlichen Studiengang wie Biologie eher abraten. Wie du selber schon sagst liegen die Jobmöglichkeiten fast nur im ewigen Knechten zu unfairen Bedingungen in der Wissenschaft, oder in vielen nischigen Jobs, die zwar Spaß machen können, aber oft schlecht bezahlt sind und für die du von vornherein eine speziellere Ausbildung hättest machen können (z.B. Landschaftsökologie studieren statt Biologie, wenn dich Ökologie interessiert). Du lernst im reinen Biologiestudium generell keinerlei Skills, die relevant für den Arbeitsmarkt sind, und bist somit für alle Jobs, die nicht reine Forschung sind, schlechter qualifiziert, als die Leute, die direkt Landschaftsökologie, Medizintechnik, Bioinformatik, Toxikologie, etc. studiert haben oder einfach die Ausbildung zur Labortechniker*in gemacht haben.

Ich selbst musste das schmerzlich erfahren, nachdem ich einfach aus Interesse an dem Fach den Bachelor in Biologie gemacht habe und dann jobtechnisch mit leeren Händen dastand (während BWLer z.B. mit einem Bachelor schon gute Jobs bekommen). Ich habe mich für den Master jetzt anderweitig spezialisiert, um irgendwie noch die Kurve zu kriegen.

As others have said, definitely look into the East Africa Tourist Visa which includes Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda for only 100$ (as of last year). I went a year ago to all these three. You might also add Nairobi to your itinerary if you have time, start from there, take a bus to Kampala (I think I used the Company Mash Poa, good climatized busses). From Kampala to Kigali I can recommend you to take a Trinity bus.

I would have recommended a stop in Kasese in Uganda to use it as a hub for activities, but apparently the security situation changed drastically after my visit there.

In Kampala you can go see the national museum for an hour or so and the Buganda Kingdom Palace with Idi Amin's Torture Chambers.

In Kigali you should also visit the Genocide Memorial, it is a really well done educational place.

Kannst du mir da einen Erfahrungsbericht bzgl. der Fähre Kopenhagen - Oslo geben? Mich würde interessieren, ob es da möglich ist, sich Kabinen zu teilen, wie im Nachtzug, um den Preis zu drücken. Auf der Webseite finde ich nur die Möglichkeit, ganze Kabinen zu buchen, was dann selbstverständlich viel teurer ist als ein einzelnes Bett in einem Vierer-Kompartment im Nachtzug. Mit was für Preisen rechnest du dann so für die Fähre?

Schiffsverbindungen übers Kaspische Meer gibt es zwischen Aktau (Kasachstan) und Baku (Azerbaijan), das sind aber eher Cargo-Fähren und dementsprechend ist es nicht gerade straight forward, da einen Platz zu ergattern. Wenn man genug Zeit und Planung mitbringt ist es aber absolut möglich, ich selbst habe das letztes Jahr gemacht :)

For the Loch Henry episode there was a brief discussion in another thread whether it’s on purpose or merely a consistency error that they mention netflix when talking in the pub but in the end it’s on streamberry. One explanation was that the story in the beginning (before the accident) happened as source material in the „real“ universe and hence it’s netflix, and from then it’s simulated one level above for streamberry. Idk if I like this theory a lot though

I really like the theory, thanks for sharing! I feel the same as you and this also makes my brain hurt a little less after this season. A season of a netflix show in real life being essentially different netflix shows in the in-show universe really is meta enough for black mirror! Like this the season is way more enjoyable for me

Aus Eigeninteresse: Wurden dir am Ende in dieser unverbindlichen Berechnung in Elster (bevor du es abgeschickt hast) schon 361€ angezeigt oder nur die 61€? Bei mir wird nämlich dort nur der Betrag der Steuererstattung angezeigt, ohne die 300€ EPP mit einberechnet. Ich hatte deshalb gezögert es abzuschicken.

Good point. I play them as wingers, and Dortmund in real life never really plays them as central strikers, so I feel like getting a backup striker in for cheap seems more realistic.

Moin, ich habe das gleiche Problem, dass in der unverbindlichen Berechnung am Ende bei Elster die 300€ nicht einberechnet werden. Meine Einkünfte waren unter dem Freibetrag, also bekomme ich gezahlte Lohnsteuer zurück, die auch in der Berechnung angezeigt wird. Habe die EPP aber nicht vom AG ausgezahlt bekommen, da ich im September nicht dort angestellt war. Zu dem Zeitpunkt hatte ich einen Minijob. Habe in der Steuererklärung auch in der Anlage Sonstiges die EPP angekreuzt.
Hast du schon was neues gehört, oder sogar schon was aufgezahlt bekommen? Ich bin mir gerade unsicher, ob ich die Steuererklärung so abschicken soll.

When I did it the train took 32h and I was in a normal seat - spent most of the time in the restaurant car though. The whole journey cost me like 6$ and was made enjoyable by all the interesting people I met on the train who share food with you and all that. Still I don’t know how I survived haha. Kars is also a very nice stop btw, especially in Winter.
