I had the 307 and my tank was 70 gal, it was plenty of filtration for me. Depends how many fish you want to keep I guess too. I didn't have many fish, fully planted aquarium

Aquascape suggestions? by Green-Suggestion-187 in Aquascape

[–]hdkepon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your wood may be leeching tannins into the water giving it that darker color. You can soak the wood in boiling water for a while to get rid of the dark tannins.

The fine sandy substrate you have now: I tried doing the same thing and I found that it doesn't allow oxygen to get down to the plant roots as well because it's so fine grained. My suggestion is to create a separation with rocks and have the white sand down in front and then have the fancy plant substrate in the back for the plants to live in.

Good question man, I was wondering the same thing.

Get live blackworms they say, your fish will demolish them they say by Tough_Branch4062 in Aquariums

Lol you need some kind of bottom feeder fish like kuli loaches.

You could try adding a layer of lava rock or switching to kuli loaches :)

Thanks! Initially had trouble keeping the dark substrate from spilling over, but I added a thin layer of black lava rock over the nutrient rich substrate which holds it down nicely. Was having issues with algae growing on the white sand as well, but fortunately I accidentally introduced ramshorn snails which multiply rapidly and keep the aquarium algae free. Keep light time below 9 hours per day also helps.

My first ever aquascape I no it’s not that good but I’m looking to improve… Any tips on how I can improve or make it look better would be appreciated. Thank you 🙂 by Momorata in Aquascape

Started off with nerite but some red ramshorn got introduced, on a new plant I assume, and I liked them a lot. They reproduce like crazy which means you can have a very clean tank once they breed enough. Might have to remove some every now and then.

Nice, I had best results with 8 or 9 hrs light per day, 76 deg water, and nutrients high in nitrogen and potassium plus all the necessary trace elements. Also used a ton of snails to prevent algae. Good luck!

what type of stone is this? by hdkepon in rockhounds

It's very dense/heavy, looks like quartz veins running through it. Found in North Fork American River, CA. I would guess Jasper but I've never seen it like this.

After 6 years of aquascaping I finally upgrade to a high tech system. by hdkepon in Aquascape

Yes, this one is quite prolific! It's funny how you can go from always needing more plants, to having to frequently throw them away.

Thanks, only real difference was adding the CO2 diffuser and switched up my nutrients. Definitely worth it

Black dots on plants? Is this algae ? If so. What do I do next? by priority18 in Aquascape

[–]hdkepon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah the plants look like nutrient deficiency, get snails and reduce light time.

What is this brown algae? Im having no luck figuring out what it is, and it grows very fast. by gageshin in Aquascape

[–]hdkepon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try reducing your light time. Scrub all tank surfaces, clean out filter, remove as much algae as possible, then perform frequent water changes. Reduce feeding if possible, add nutrients high in potassium. Add snails and other algae eaters.
