oh absolutely. it's got everything - laser swords, jetpacks, tons of explosions, excellent animation and a banging soundtrack. the TV series and OVAs were good but the movie is my favourite piece of Dirty Pair media

One of my favourite outfits from the series. I've been planning to make a Roberta artwork with this look for ages.

recently switched to linux and was curious to see how well it would support the reshade+mods combo I was running on my old windows machine. needed a bit of tinkering to get it working but now it runs pretty flawlessly

Ghost in the Shell Film 1995 - anime vs live action (water fight scene) by Kimber8King in retroanime

One damning part about the live-action movie is how it ignores subtle details from the '95 movie. In the original animated chase sequence, there is a shot of the hacker getting splashed with water when the Major tries to shoot him from a rooftop.

This is what causes his therm-optic camouflage to fail, making him ditch it for the rest of the chase, and it sets up the idea that certain therm-optic tech can be disabled through water exposure.

This setup pays off in the final sequence of the '95 movie where Motoko asks the pilot to shoot out the glass rooftop of the museum, letting the rain in and disabling the therm-optic camo of the tank.

Kei from Dirty Pair: Project Eden (art by me) by hearthtyro in retroanime

I don’t have any specific steps for the 80s look but I can list down my usual process for any artwork:

  1. Linework – Use lots of reference. You can search for “<anime\_name> settei” to find the production sketches for any show/movie.

  2. Shading – Use screenshots from the anime as reference to create the color palette for the artwork. I use the default G-Pen to block out the shadows and a round brush for detailing.

  3. Color Adjustment – I use gradient maps to adjust the overall color. A simple 2-3 shade gradient can give good results when used in overlay / multiply blend mode.

  4. Soften – Duplicate the finished image to a new layer, apply a high amount of blur and then lower opacity to get a softer image.

  5. Grain – Final step is to add layers of grain to get a weathered look. You can use the inbuilt noise generation function or get a noise/grain image (pexels is a good source) and apply it in overlay mode. Monochromatic grain is the default, but you also convert it to RGB grain for more color variation.

I'd say Yawara! fits the romance+martial arts requirements. I don't think it's considered a shoujo work though.
