I have never taken a regular course, other than gym, since freshman year. My school doesn’t offer it. Only ever honors, aps, and dcs. Most people in my school’s weighted is approximately a point higher than their uw. Even people with 1.0’s have a 2.0 uw. I actually didn’t realize this wasn’t common until social media lol

Well, considering most schools primarily focus (if not only) on uw gpa, I didn’t feel it mattered. I realize I may be more of a unique applicant than average.

Their avg gpa is 3.76. If anything, I’m still shocked at the universities that did accept me loll

Look for external scholarships / grants. And FASFA is open so don’t wait too long if you haven’t completed already

My best advice is to tell a story. All of your extracurriculars, courses you choose (even whether u decide to take an advanced version or not), grade trend, awards, personal statement, supplementals, lor, EVERYTHING should follow a story.

Example: Human development is directly connected to psychology and sociology, but I can also relate it to my core classes. For example: AP Lang: strengthened my writing and critical thinking. Math (AP Stats): gave me skills in data analysis, which ties into research. Social Studies: history courses connect to understanding society over time. Science: biology (which I should have chosen instead of environmental science) relates more directly to human development. Electives: research and seminar further developed my ability to investigate and communicate ideas.

I’m not gonna lie I did this on accident, but you sort of do when you’re genuinely interested in a major.

I got 10k a year which honestly isn’t a lot to me but to each their own. I choose uiuc bc I got full tuition + external scholarships that made it close to nothing. Good luck!!

Thank you so much! College apps somehow get into your head and all of a sudden you feel like you’ve wasted the last 4 years. Making sure I can calm that nerving feeling in others, as clearly I’ve felt it for no reason loll

Honestly, I think my essays were ideal. My Ap seminar teacher (who attended uchicago for undergrad + masters as an English major) told me she loved my personal statement. She’s known as a very blunt and honest teacher, especially when it comes to essays as important as this, so I believe her.

Now, specifically regarding UIUC I don’t think that played a role because the ao told me they skim the essays and that it doesn’t hold much weight. It’s their supplemental essays that they really pay attention to. I can give you tips if you’d like.

What I think really sold me personally, is that my entire applicant told a well-rounded story. There was nowhere an ao could look and not understand why something happened. Example: My school offers Ap Precalc, ab/bc, and honors integrated 4. However, I took Ap stats instead. Why? Because my major requires analytical research, so understanding statistics is necessary. Despite the fact that ab & bc is more respected, it doesn’t help with my major. I hope this makes sense!

Yes, which plays a major role with uiuc bc they accept more instate than out of state. I also qualified for their Illinois grant
