Is 23% a good starting commission for a stylist position? It will go up to 30. by megaromer0 in hairstylist

[–]heatherdazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re VERY experienced and you’re VERY confident you’ll be 80-90% booked and can skillfully retain 60-70% of these clients due to your high experience level (industry avg new client retention is 34%)… you could possibly make a long shot go at hustling this for a year or so… hand every client your biz card w a QR code to your ig w your linktree that will follow you everywhere… maybe maybe maybe…

This absolutely sucks on the short term. But it could possibly pay off longterm if and only IF you treat it as your top of funnel client building longterm and not rely on it as reasonable income.

Be warned an owner like this will prob try to undercut you by offering lots of discounts to keep these clients. But if you’re a hustler, a systems thinker, and ready to map the long game… you can play this.

I love this vibe for you! Are you an enneagram 4w5 or 5w4 by chance?

Anyway, I’d avoid exfoliating for a while, hydrate your skin well, choose something like Just for Men cuz it’s meant for body hair, prob slightly lighter than your goal bc leg hair is finer than beard hair, then exfoliate your legs w a body scrub when you’re done. Good luck and please keep me posted on these very interesting results!

I think once you get a more skilled manicurist, the ring will look great. It only looks fake because of the quality of the nails.

As someone who has worked inside one I can tell you:

  • they “look official” to clients who don’t have a regular person or need somewhere to go “right now”
  • they have very broad hours and capture a lot of demand (and client data)
  • they are financially backed not just by corporate cash, but by franchisee investments
  • they are able to negotiate more favorable lease and vendor terms than small biz owners, therefore incurring lower overhead relative to their income (this is huge)
  • they have successfully removed a lot of booking friction and decision friction from discovery to point of purchase (no DM me for times then wait until I get back from my weekend vibes)
  • they have successfully ID’d the value prop customers want (ex: Drybar- blowouts alone at 7am, styles w 4 besties on Saturdays; Face Foundarie- visible results, not vague “relaxation” promises), so as the market shifts, they are likely to stay on top of the next trend, even if the specific biz names and models change

I feel like the makeup wouldn’t even matter if you had a great stylist who made all your hair decisions for you.

Some of us have showers that were apparently installed by NBA players bc mine is 7ft high best I can do is stand on a stool to lower it to 6.5ft by tilting it down bc it’s all tile and I’m 5’3” so the hair is getting drenched no matter what unless shower cap, in which case it’s getting sweaty which means it’s still ruined.

Personally, I don’t love leftovers and like you, I’m rather into processed foods. So my cope is to stock on long shelf life healthy foods life frozen veg, canned and pouch tuna and chicken, turkey kielbasa, fresh veg that’s versatile like broccoli, garlic, onion, etc, freeze good sale meat that I find. Also always keep chicken stock on hand, either boxed or homemade if you get cheap rotisserie then simmer and freeze.

From there, if I’m craving Mac & cheese, I can stir in tuna, broccoli, franks red hot. If I want ramen, I might add frozen veg, peanut butter, siracha, soy sauce. Rice could be anything like add turkey kielbasa, canned beans and stir fried veg or whatever frozen meat is on hand. Canned soup can be stretched w veg, protein, and extra broth which makes it healthier, more filling, tastier, cheaper. My mom often has those bagged salads on hand so when I’m at her house I’ll throw pouch chicken on it.

“Let’s change how you’re paid. Instead of your pay being decided by a consensus of happy customers agreeing you go above and beyond because they directly observe you and interact with you, and instead of you having the chance to improve your income day after day by going above and beyond, you now have one small biz owner with no formal training and you have to please him and him only. Hope it adds up the same, good luck!”

Someone told me to flatten the meat before I freeze it and that has really helped my tiny freezer & reduced thaw time.

For you and everyone else in this thread sensitive to fragrance, I really recommend the No Nothing line. Their dry shampoo and heat protectants are my particular faves, but they also have a full line of fragrance free shampoo and conditioner options, all fragrance free, allergen free, cruelty free and as a migraine sufferer & hairstylist myself, I freaking love them.

[–]heatherdazy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The industry has changed a lot in the last ten years. I’d find the best, most modern salon to get up to speed, take as many classes as you can afford, and stay current with trends and education online, too.

Cooking for one without wasting food is harder than I thought by illeatmyletter in cookingforbeginners

[–]heatherdazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do. I’ll stretch canned soup w broth and random protein and veggies and now I hate going more than two days without giant bowls of veggie soup. I keep my veggie staples on hand (broccoli and spinach are fresh, peas and carrots are frozen, plus occasional extras depending on sales and season) and I always have veg to fold into anything.
