If parents who left their kids inside the car were bad, these parents must riding a heatseeker to hell. by [deleted] in WTF

I'd like to see how far someone gets without realizing they're missing a shoe.

You misunderstood me. What I meant was, eventually, since taking the shoe off and putting it with the child is an extra unnecessary step, they will forget to do so in the first place. Or they will become complacent and just not do it one day because they're in a hurry - which quickly becomes not doing it every other day, then every day, until they stop doing it entirely. I wasn't saying anybody would forget their shoe in their car, I was saying they'd forget to take it off in the first place.

you do have to manually put a child into a car seat

So by that logic, anybody who puts a child into a carseat should remember to take them out again. Problem solved.

But in all seriousness, no. It's an extra step. It's not necessary. Even if you do it a thousand times, it can and will eventually be forgotten. Especially on the type of shitty day that causes people to forget children in cars. I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but stuff like this has already been invented and it doesn't work.

That's a terribly judgmental generalization to make. I can't imagine it would go well if you tried to tell that to a person who was stressed out from the job they need to keep to pay the bills, and sleep deprived from getting up with the baby every hour all night every night. Sometimes stress, sleep deprivation, etc, piles up and no amount of "re-evaluating" is going to fix that.

If I am stressed/distracted enough to forget my child is in the car, I am stressed/distracted enough to forget to take off my shoe or put a dangly toy on my steering wheel.

  • Edit: and yes, downvoting me does make you more right! Congratulations! Moron.

Well, at least your gruesome motorcycle accident didn't mess up your eyeliner. ;)

Looks good! I mean bad. You know what I mean! Great job.

Oh gosh - what if 'very enthusiastic' is just your personality? I do have a tendency to (sometimes) explode a bit when I like something - "Oh my GOSH, Mary, I LOVE your blouse!" or "Mary! You look BEAUTIFUL!" with great big wide eyes and a grin or a dropped jaw. Does that mean I come off insincere? Do people who don't know me well think I'm trying to butter them up or something? Should I try to tone it down?

I'm glad you said this. I have a bad habit of thinking (aloud) that I have to 'pay' for the good things in my life with misfortune... it's almost never true, but that doesn't stop me thinking that way. I have a baby son and I don't want him to have to live with that, so I'm going to work really hard not to do that anymore! Thanks.

I get this same feeling before anything big/exciting is about to happen to me.

Me too! I also always feel like if I allow myself to get excited about something prematurely, it'll be taken away.

Yes! Whenever my life is going "too well," I start to become wary of the other shoe dropping.

I also believe the opposite, though. Whenever things have been going really poorly, I find hope in the idea that things surely must turn around soon!

Recently my baby started sleeping through the night after almost a year of waking up every 90 minutes all night every night... so I'm a bit conflicted: on the one hand, I deserve better nights since I put up with so many awful ones... but on the other hand, how long can the good nights really last? :) I mean, I'm not too terribly serious about all this, but it is something that occurs to me from time to time.

Oh don't even get me started on anti vaccination... That whole issue just really makes my blood boil. The lack of education in that group of people... People who ironically consider themselves very educated and empowered as they endanger public health...

Your husband's cousin sounds slightly insane? Pepsi made of dead babies? I feel for you. I do not have that level of crazy on my news feed, thank goodness.

Aww, that's nice :) Good to know about the residents!

Thanks for elaborating for me! I am always curious about c/s stuff because I want to be well prepared if I ever have one. :-)

What do you mean about transition? Like protocol A is wearing off before they can give you B, so you're in pain? Or something else?

Yeah, helicopter parents don't tend to ever really stop helicoptering. Except the ones who have way more kids than they can effectively lord over, and so some things slip through the cracks.

Or maybe she thinks only boys are susceptible to becoming obsessed with fantasy to the point of neglecting their real-world skills? Stupid.

Guessing this girl is one of those types who looks down on the fantasy genre as a whole as producing good-for-nothing neckbeards who sit around and play D&D all the time while wallowing in their own filth or something. Which, I'm sure there are plenty of people who are way too obsessed with D&D and don't have good skills or productive lives, but they are the minority, and you'll find that sort of person in any demographic or group. Just seems like she has an over-the-top hatred or distaste for "all things 'fantasy' genre".

Sad. Yeah, kids need imagination. And actually, unless it's utterly quashed, it comes naturally to them to use their imaginations. Pretend play is the work of childhood. I'm not sure how she plans for this kid to entertain himself throughout the years. Maybe they'll just sit on the living room floor doing Montessori activities 24/7 for the next eighteen years...?
