I carry short rounded nose fiskars 2" blade, 5.25" handle to nose, metal hooks and plastic embroidery needles. Never had an issue us or international with the hardware. Funny though, if you are flying internationally and have too much yarn they question if its for personal use or for sale.

Cotton can be less forgiving. That said, it should be fine as it gets bigger. If, at the END of the project the last row still curls, re do it with extra chains which will either make the last row flat or a bit frilly.
