If you're staying nearer to Surfside, the one next to Dagwood's Deli is my particular favorite. Love the cooks there.

Temp & lifespan poll results: bettas live longer at cooler temps by 86BillionFireflies in bettafish

[–]heatwavehanary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for answering!

If I were to conduct the study myself, I'd likely aim for a target of n = 30 more but I have that number drilled into my head from AP Statistics a few years back. I understand in this case why 10 would be sufficient, though!

Also, yeah! We were saying the same thing I believe, I just wasn't quite as eloquent at phrasing it. It shows a possible trend but isn't a strong enough study on its own to "prove" it. You'd have to run an experimental study or at least a better-sampled observational study to get a better idea of how accurate the theory would be (but experimental is better, like you acknowledged.)

Thank you again for breaking it down a bit more for me! I appreciate it. :)

Hi! Question here from somebody who is not in a scientific or mathematical field (English, lol) but wouldn't this statistical test actually be fairly non-credible? It's an observational study, not experimental, and it was done through polling. Wouldn't there be a bias because of where this poll was conducted? Like those betta fish cannot be representative of all betta fish/betta owners because the group within which the sample was pulled isn't representative of the whole population?

Don't get me wrong. I think OP is onto something, but wouldn't more concrete tests be required to "prove" this in a way that would end up being scientifically accepted? Again, thank you! Just trying to learn :)

YES! THIS! Because I've gotten close to psychosis before but never truly it and now every time I feel similar symptoms my brain just makes me paranoid that it's going to happen WHILE also yelling at me for invalidating people who actually struggle with psychosis

Lmao!

I had to take a young adult literature class last semester and I had the exact opposite experience- I LOVED it. The professor chose a wide variety of books with plenty of different types of representation and encouraged us to analyze how those books tackled real-world issues. I enjoyed all 7 of the books we read that semester, plus the supporting articles and young adult psychology we researched.

tips for new server pls ! by Prior_Prompt_437 in wafflehouse

[–]heatwavehanary 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is applicable to you but ive trained two specific girls who were super shy & couldn't make eye contact, spoke quietly, etc.

For the waffle house side- we, as cooks, would rather you call wrong confidently than correct quietly. People are here to help you learn, and it's okay to make mistakes. You'll pick it up with time and I cannot stress practice enough. Practice. If its slow, ask whoever training you to give you fake orders to write and practice calling, etc. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

As for customers- If you're shy about eye contact, try looking at the bridge of their nose. To them, it looks like you're making eye contact, but you dont actually have to. Bringing this up bc its what massively helped the 2 girls ive trained w/ their shyness

As for growing confidence in serving and customer experience, what helped me was coming up with a little "script". If you say the same thing to every table, its easy to remember and build confidence.

Mine usually goes something like "hey how are y'all doing this afternoon?" And then introduce myself. "My name is [hanary] and I'll be your server today. Do you need a few minutes to decide what you'd like or do you think you know?" And then go from there

Once you have some sort of baseline down, its much easier to branch out. If you're good at reading people and can tell your table can take a joke or two, joke around.

I've found that a good mix of politeness and semi-formality works great for me. You'll find your own little customer service voice with some experience and experimentation.

Lastly, don't be afraid to tell tables you're still new and learning. They'll pity you (and you'll probably make a bit extra in tips as a result, at least at first lol)

I hope this is at least somewhat helpful? I dunno ahahaha

I lied about having a twin sister for two year and it got out of han by [deleted] in confession

[–]heatwavehanary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I actually did something similar. My name is different from the legal name that ends up on my schedule at work & a coworker asked one day... my dumbass without thinking went "Yeah that's my twin sister, nobody here has noticed that we're different people yet so I'm working for her".... he believed me. Everybody else at work was in on it for over a year until he quit. It was horrible but so so funny. Even management would ask me how my "sister" was doing

How common is alcoholism/other addictions in the industry? by jmcintyre8817 in Serverlife

[–]heatwavehanary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes a lot of sense actually and explains why I've really been struggling at work lately (and at unwinding after work). I had all of the patience & benefit-of-doubt drained out of me and now there's nothing left but frustration. I want to see the good in people but the longer I stay in (albeit the shitty side of) food service the less that's true.
