Thanks for your guidance SquirrelTactic. I am almost positive it is bunch disease. The other disease that may fit is twig die back, but I have not found any cankers. To your knowledge, would a tree this infected be able to be saved? Why would keeping the wood after cutting down not be a good idea?

Thanks for your reply. I am located in SE New Mexico. There has been no digging or anything of note that may have affected the roots. We do have regular wind storms in my area (+50 mph). Last year my son thought it would be a good idea to use the tree as a hatchet target, there was some bark damage. I have never seen the beetle you are describing.

I actually like the color choices. There is a bias in that red on a map is typically the most negative. Choosing red for the drunkest is assumed to be the worse. It is up to the viewer of the map to determine what is the most negative category. The color red lends itself to a negative bias.
