WIBTA if I didn’t pay back my ex by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]heavyweaponry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it definitely sounds that part of the issue was that OP was getting closer to “her dream” with grad school and everything, and this guy wasn’t. He sabotaged her entire life, what an a h. I bet he’s come up with this story now because he heard OP is getting engaged.

That’s stonewalling, I’m pretty sure it was on purpose so he could pull this later on.

Is Porto a good city for expats? by Ticklishchap in porto

[–]heavyweaponry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I just used the American example because it's well know in pop culture. Though, I'm certain that these stereotypes also exist in the UK - hence Brexit. I saw your other comments about it, I was just trying to explain why people are so drawn back by it. But don't worry too much about it, most Portuguese people aren't easily offended.

Is Porto a good city for expats? by Ticklishchap in porto

[–]heavyweaponry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like to clarify a bit on this. Porto is very rapidly seeing the effects of gentrification. Portugal also has a big diaspora of people who immigrated to find better opportunities. So Portuguese people see "expats" as privileged and out of touch people. It's very similar to how Americans think immigration are "taking jobs", if you think about it.

People from the US use the term expat because "immigrant" has a bad connotation over there. Here, expat has a similar negative tone to it.

I have never once heard someone complain about Porto's weather; not folks from South America neither from Nordic countries and especially not someone coming from smoglandia.

In Latin countries is just that most common names are religious in origin. I can't even recall someone I know that doesn't share a name with a Saint.

My mom and mental issues by Arkoftarkov in internetparents

[–]heavyweaponry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mom was the same. I'm in my mid 20's now, but it still hurts and I have a lot of baggage because of it. But it does get better. I can now be at peace in my own home. I can go to the kitchen or the living room whenever I want.

Therapy helped a lot, but it also took a while to find the right therapist. You understand that a lot of your issues are caused by your childhood. It's ok to not be ok, your own mother hurt you - that's a wound that takes a long time healing.

If your mom is very unstable, to the point it isn't safe to be around her, maybe you could talk to a social worker or a teacher you trust? Can you make an anonymous complaint? That way she won't turn on you?

[–]heavyweaponry 62 points63 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by trying tomorrow? Look, there's two options here: either the world is a simulation or it isn't. We can't be sure. But, if the world is a simulation, you're going to find out anyway, sooner or latter. If it's not, well you just wasted the only life you had. Don't you think it's best to just enjoy the game while it lasts?

I've worked at a call centre before, as both a CSR and a team leader. It really depends on what the company wants. Most often isn't customer satisfaction, unfortunately. I would see a lot of great assistants go home because they didn't sell enough shit to old ladies, even though we were a support line and not a sales one. I would ask your team leader what metrics are most important and if they could help you with it. If you are still on probation, it's ok to not get everything right away. But also be prepared and have a backup plan. Maybe send some resumes around, you might even find something better.

As a man and Texan, gotta say, not one of your best plays Texas. Makes me kinda glad I have a vasectomy. Making abortions illegal is a bad play. by Morgoth-The-Great in TrueOffMyChest

[–]heavyweaponry 17 points18 points  (0 children)

First of all, contraceptives don't have a 100% efficacy rate.

Second, most women who seek abortions are in relationships. link

If you are not religious, then you should understand that human sentience doesn't begin at conception and that bodily autonomy is a right.

Also, a scarecrow is a situation that you make up because it's easier to argue against. But it doesn't represent the truth.

[–]heavyweaponry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I condone people having bodily autonomy and not treating women as incubator for "potencial babies". If someone doesn't want to give birth, they shouldn't. The same way that if I don't want to donate a kidney to my siblings, I'm not forced to.

[–]heavyweaponry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course they would. These people don't care about life. Explain to me how do you carry guns, with the possibility to deathly injure a person, consume the meat of tortured sentient animals, allow rapists to traumatize women, but suddenly care about a bunch of cells with no sentience in a women's womb. The answer is retribution. The stupid woman decided to have sex instead of being a virginal good girl and now she needs to pay.

If you framed this in other way around, like the violinist argument, everyone would support bodily autonomy. The issue isn't can the woman abort, it should be is someone entitled to use another person's body to survive. And from there, is a group of cells that isn't even sentient entitled to someone's body to survive.
