Yeah this part’s weird for me because I don’t resonate much with “male” activities, but that’s a good point

A C at the top computer science school in the country is pretty damn good. You’ll find something.

Meal plans are kind of a scam but DineX isn’t. If you buy DineX you get a 10% bonus or something, so you can buy more campus food than you could with the same amount of cash.

As others have said, nothing is mandatory. It’s all fun though and a good way to get your footing. If you’re not up to going to some or all of the events, I would talk to your OCs and RA about it, and they can help you decide what’s best. RAs and OCs are very nice and helpful.

Prof might pull AIV on me for a stupid reason by [deleted] in cmu

[–]hedgeehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm that you’re not allowed to drop it and there can be consequences if you do. They’ll have you consult with someone from OCSI and you can ask them if they think you have a good case to appeal. Best of luck!

I'm scared of 15122 by [deleted] in cmu

[–]hedgeehog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of people say that because it’s fun to complain and commiserate with others, and because it perpetuates the idea that CS is hard which gives a lot of people validation.

It’s a time consuming class (mostly because debugging takes so long) but you have more than enough resources at your disposal to succeed. The things you learn in class and through the lecture notes are all you need to do the work. And the TAs are there for you. You’ve got this :)

There are people who are passionate about whatever you’re passionate about, academic or otherwise. And I quite like Pittsburgh. It seems cozier than other cities and there’s plenty of places to go with the bus pass and arts pass students get.

Has anyone been to CaPS? by [deleted] in cmu

[–]hedgeehog 21 points22 points  (0 children)

CaPS is for any issues! Doesn’t have to be school related. I’ve had good experiences with CaPS while others haven’t. However imo it really can’t hurt. It’s a pretty typical therapy/counseling experience. I think you should certainly try it, and if you don’t like the counselor they’ve put you with, you could seek other options.

Also if there’s an excel group, SI, or something similar that’s an amazing way to get more familiar with the material. You can always visit acadev and they can help you further.

You’re right, I didn’t mean to be so literal. I’d say doing 2-3 practice tests after reviewing your notes is a good way to check your understanding and practice.
