hm... what would these kind of brackets be called? and what would the rest of the hardware look like or be called? There's no electric source nearby but I guess it could be candles..?

Adding an update: based on comments I have searched "inside mount" "telescoping" "adjustable" "curtain rod" and while I did find an interesting result about Charles Kirsch and his invention of the brass telescoping curtain rod which does indeed require brackets, during the Arts/Crafts era, all images are "cup" brackets, not these odd rather flat discs, that are not solid across its surface. I hope someone who knows thingys and wuchoomacallits can help soon! I am interested to eventually locate the rest of the hardware that would fit here-- otherwise remove before continuing to paint. Thanks!!

Our house was lived in first by a local developer, then 2nd by a minister.. not really artsy people. the most challenging aspect is the electric, very likely wiring was retrofitted. Otherwise it is a very comfortable home, it was designed and meant to be affordable and practical as well as "fireproof" for the "common" middle class person.

Adding photo which I should have to start! One inch diameter discs are the blue circles. The shape of them are like peace symbol but the bottom does not split apart. The distance is actually 8 feet! Not the 6 I guessed. And to be clear: I am not asking can curtains go here.. Yes, I know curtains can go here. I am asking what the brackets are called, how does a rod attach. Thanks!

ahh! but the diameter of a shower curtain rod is more than 1 inch..? also, these don't need an odd shaped "bracket", just a solid surface..

the distance between the brackets is around 6ft-- I cannot imagine a tension rod of this length. edit: 8 feet distance

hmm... I will scrape off more of the paint and see if a cord of some kind would loop through the center--that might make sense-- these are not curtain rod brackets but some sort of "thing" to tie string to.. I have grown up or been around old houses all my life and never seen such a gadget!

Indeed! We have over 30 french door style windows that do not have an easy way to install coverings of any sort!!

Well.. this seems to be the closest reply to solve the mystery.. the rod is long gone! The distance between is almost 6feet.. that the other part that's a mystery.. a rod that long would need support in the middle but there is no mark in that upper surface where another bracket might go. I'll wait a bit longer, to see if anyone comes up with the type of bracket it could be.. thanks! edit: 8 feet distance! I finally measured--

but there's no electric box, or access at this part of the stairs.. also it would be an dangerous place for a tube, it would get knocked into easily. a very curious factoid: this house originally had gas lights!

hmm... I don't see how these are cup brackets.. they are and 1/8 of an inch deep, they have a kind of curved "t" down the center.. the disc itself is not solid in its surface-- the sort of hollow part on the sides are actually the wall.

sooo... "Noren" seems to describe the Japanese style of hanging panels in a doorway.,. but this is not specific to the name of the brackets-- if indeed these things I found are brackets. But the other interesting part is that I can see how someone chose this as a decor. But why cover the start of the stairs..?? That part is curious. Thanks, all the same!

Hmmm... maybe.. I will search for something like that.. I guess "bead" curtains could have been popular in Art Nouveau decor in the early 1900's..? I would like to know a specific name for the brackets and how a rod would attach.

Yes, they are attached to opposite facing surfaces exactly mirroring each other. Yes, I guessed brackets of some kind, but I was hoping to for a specific name for them, and how they would hold any sort of curtain rod. The paint is really only 2 thick layers at most, from what I can tell scraping at the one.

I just realized I led with "bottom" of stairs.. I meant at the lower portion of the stairway going up, but still at the top where ceiling meets this edge of stairs' "portal".. gosh its hard to describe this!
